Helena Signs With Warner Bros. Records

Helena

Warner Bros. Records has signed India-born, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Helena, who is preparing for several upcoming live appearances that will introduce the newcomer. Discovered and signed by WBR Senior Vice President of A&R Kara DioGuardi, Helena will perform at The Hotel Café in Hollywood for three-show residency, appearing on June 7th, June 14th, and June 21st. She will also perform on the BMI Stage at this year’s Lollapalooza festival, which takes place August 3-5 in Chicago, Illinois.

Helena has been in the studio with producer Sandy Chila working on songs for her debut album, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records later this year. “To me, the music is a film for your ears, sometimes a fairytale, or a mystery,” Helena says. “It is by turns cinematic, brooding, emotional, and playful. Each song is woven with both dark and light. If you listen carefully, there’s a lot of subtlety and nuance in the structure behind the bass and the beats. I want my music to take listeners back to a time when they felt free and happy and remind them that they can feel that now, no matter how challenging their lives are. I’d like the music to be a home for them.”

DioGuardi added, “Helena’s songs are a kind of hypnotic, melodic poetry. She paints pictures and evokes moods with her lyrics. I believe she is one of the most talented artists out there today.”

Rachel Taylor Out Of He Is We, Stevie Scott In

He Is We

Rachel Taylor of checked in with fans on her Tumblr earlier this month, talking about the impact of having ankylosing spondylitis, the physical toll touring had on her, the phoniness of the “Get Well Soon Rachel” tour with fill-in Stevie Scott, who ended up being her replacement, and being a victim of superficial marketing. Taylor writes:

I can already see the repercussions of the honesty I have shared. I did not do this to start drama, but to merely share the truth about what is really going on.

He Is We started as a fun little gig that required no contracts, no merchandise, no selling out and no vision of getting to where we have. This was a project that I became passionate about because I saw it as a way to reach people. I felt like God had placed me specifically to help others. When I was told that I could be paid to do what I love, I was overwhelmed with joy. Next thing I knew, we were in New York and this new life with He Is We, the product, began.

We were given a lump sum of money and told we could record whatever we wanted to. It felt like a dream. As the touring and songwriting became more intense and strenuous my health began to worsen. I kept to myself for the majority of it and ended up in the ER several times over a course of 2 months. It no longer was something I lived to do, but I did it to live. Money made itself to the front of the line and I began losing myself. With all the ER visits, the bills were adding up. I realized that touring was killing me, but I couldn’t afford not to go. I would play a show and then throw up immediately afterwards. Lock myself in the green room, isolating myself from everyone, just to catch my breath.

If that wasn’t enough, alcohol became a huge part of touring. That whole, “sex, drugs and rock & roll” is a very real thing. The life style began to look very grim. All the while, I was having a very tough internal struggle. Who had I become? What was this band becoming? I noticed more and more that answers were rehearsed, responses to emails were copied and pasted, and the genuine love I was had was overshadowed by my hate for the industry.

A couple months ago I was told I have an auto-immune disease called ankylosing spondylitis. I was put on two chemotherapy drugs and told it was going to be a rough ride. I shared this with my management and my band, but still the touring plans were made. As it got closer and closer to tour time, I was in a panic. Two doctors were telling me if I left I would be killing myself and then I had management telling me I would be destroying He Is We if I cancelled the tour. So. I was given options.

At first I was told that a fan from each city would be chosen to sing the songs in my place. Soon after that, I was told that a mutual friend named Stevie Scott would be singing in my place for the tour. I was told that she was to come over to my place with Trevor so I could meet her and introduce her to all the fans. This made me feel good knowing I could give her my blessing. That morning came and they didn’t show. A couple days went by and I heard nothing. I called my manager and his phone was dead. I was left feeling confused and alone. Reading tweets like “welcome to the family Stevie!” were all over my newsfeed and my heart broke.

The tour was marketed as a “Get Well Soon Rachel” type of thing, but I heard nothing from my band. No one emailed, called or texted me to say such things. I have had to sit back and watch fans support a cause that didn’t really exist. I had had enough after reading a Facebook reply to a mother about how distraught her daughter was about the whole thing. Whoever runs the He Is We Facebook replied with something very superficial. A lot of smileys and no substance. At that point it hit me… I have lost my baby. The project had become about marketing, money and numbers. So I reacted.

Many will be upset at my honesty, but I hope that in the end people realize that I did what I felt was best. I am protecting the sanctity of the words that went into building this “brand” and this awesome fan base. Think what you will. You have every right to tell me I’m wrong or I’m out of my mind. I will have peace knowing I followed my heart.

-Rachel

Lynda Sayyah

Eric Hutchinson ‘Watching You Watch Him’ Video

Eric Hutchinson wearing sunglasses

is out with the music video to his new single ‘Watching You Watch Him’, off the Washington, DC singer songwriter’s new album ‘Moving Up Living Down’, released Tuesday on Warner Bros. Records.

“Some of it is very close the heart, and some of it is more fictional,” Eric told Daily Nebraskan about the album’s music. “Honestly, I can’t make every song autobiographical because my life is just not that interesting. But I have a lot of people in my life who go through a lot of different things and sometimes it’s interesting to observe from the outside. I tend to put it into first person because I always find it more interesting when it comes from the person. Even if it’s not me, I like the storyteller giving you the angle.”

Kerli Starstruck After Meeting Richard Branson

Kerli in space

Celebuzz caught up with at the NewNowNext Awards on Thursday night, which air Monday (April 9) at 10p/9c on Logo. The Estonian pop singer talked about how she decides what to wear to an event, being starstruck by Richard Branson after meeting the billionaire business magnate at a pre Grammy party, and wanting more views after her ‘Zero Gravity’ video crossed the million mark.

“I’m not really the pop culture celebrity kind of.. I don’t buy the magazines, I don’t have a TV,” she said about the Branson encounter. “I’m not really inspired by fame necessarily, but when I met Richard Branson, for me he’s one of the biggest thinkers of our time, so that was very, very impressive. I was really wanting to cry and was shaking and I was like, ‘I cannot believe I’m meeting Richard Branson.’”

Miles Holmwood And Aaron Verdonk Depart Stereos

Stereos

Pat Kordyback, Daniel Johnson, Rob Chalifoux, Miles Holmwood and Aaron Verdonk of checked in with fans on their Facebook on March 12th to announce the departure of Miles and Aaron from the Canadian pop group. The remaining three members are now working on a follow-up to their 2010 album ‘Uncontrollable’. They write:

To all our amazing fans,

After a few of the best years of our lives, we have all mutually and amicably decided that we all need to make changes moving forward. Because of this, Aaron and Miles will no longer be members of Stereos. This was obviously not an easy decision to make but after weighing all possibilities for countless different reasons, we all believe this is in everyone’s best interest.

There is also some good news. The 3 of us remaining have officially started working on what we believe is by far our best album yet. We’re already hard at work putting it together and we can honestly say we’ve never felt more motivated and excited since we began this band in Pat’s basement 6 years ago. We can’t wait to get back on the road to bring it to you all again soon.

We want to reiterate that all 5 of us are still very much friends and can’t thank you all enough for your love and support past, present and future.

Much love,

Robb, Pat, Daniel, Aaron, and Miles.

Laura Jansen Reacts To Kony / Invisible Children Critiques

Laura Jansen 'Bells'

checked in with her Facebook followers on March 7th and 8th, talking about the controversial Kony 2012 campaign and the reaction she received for posting the short film created by Invisible Children about fugitive Joseph Kony. The Dutch-American singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles writes:

Hey guys…I’m not trying to get you to donate money. I’m trying to spread awareness. What you do with that awareness is your very own and very personal choice. Most of us don’t know enough about Kony and that will hopefully change through the activism of the MANY organizations working in Uganda. Thank you all for sharing thoughts and links. Feel free to share more, but i encourage you to do it in a spirit of awareness instead of discounting the entire campaign. Our brains, when educated, are powerful things :)Spread the word!

I think the fact that we’re having this discussion thousands of miles apart on a music Facebook page is exactly the purpose:) I so appreciate you all chiming in. Some of us have been “lucky” enough to have been aware of the far bigger problem of child soldiers while others are just becoming aware through a major online campaign. The more the merrier. You lose me however when the discourse degrades to language like “clowns, manipulation, idealistic jargon, etc”. There is a greater purpose to awareness. Once you know something, you cannot un-know it. Something changes in the way you see the world. I have won the lottery of life simply by being born in a first world nation. I lead a first world life and no matter how much I try, I see the world through first world eyes. I admit that. It does not however, disqualify me from wanting deeply to understand the problems of a world that is not mine. it does not disqualify you from gathering as much information from as many places as possible to make up your own beautiful mind. I’m a cynical person sometimes but on a fundamental level I believe change is always possible. That is a far cry from idealistic jargon. The evolution of issues and the change we want to see may not happen on our own time or in our preferred way but I believe in it as a human movement. I would rather discuss this and go around in circles with you than sit back in my first world chair and say in my first world voice that all of this is nonsense and should therefor be abandoned. Keep it up!

Marina And The Diamonds ‘Primadonna’ Video

Marina and the Diamonds 'Electra Heart'

(Marina Diamandis) is out with the music video to her new single ‘Primadonna’, the first release from the Welsh singer-songwriter’s second studio album ‘Electra Heart’, out on Elektra Records this summer.

‘Electra Heart’ was written and recorded in London and Los Angeles over the last 18 months while on tour. Featuring new self-written tracks, Marina handpicked a close group of collaborators to write and produce with including Dr Luke, Rick Nowels, Liam Howe, Greg Kurstin and Diplo.

Marina said about the new album, “It’s an ode to dysfunctional love. I based the project around character types commonly found in love stories, film and theatre, usually ones associated with power and control in love, as opposed to weakness or defeat. I guess it was a way of dealing with the embarrassment that, for the first time in my life, I got ‘played’. Rejection is a universally embarrassing topic and ‘Electra Heart’ is my response to that. It is a frank album.”

Marina is now set to embark on a worldwide tour as the main support on Coldplay’s upcoming tour. U.S. dates below:
July 29 | Boston, MA, TD Garden
July 30 | Boston, MA, TD Garden
August 1 | Detroit, MI, Palace of Auburn Hills
August 3 | East Rutherford, NJ, Izod Center
August 4 | East Rutherford, NJ, Izod Center
August 7 | Chicago, IL, United Center
