Britney Spears’ Sound Puts Her Above Competitors
Britney Spears: A manufactured image? What a tired and trite label. This is the knee-jerk response from critics and pundits everywhere when they can’t explain the appeal of Miss Spears. I guess it helps them sleep at night.
Instead of going the R&B light or pop route of many artists (Justin Timberlake, Hilary Duff), Britney decided to do a dance club album. She’s ventured into the trip-hop arena. Something not too many U.S. artists are doing right now.
There is no screeching, whining or vocal diarrhea ala Christina Aguilera. Spears is not trying to convince others she’s “from the block” like Jennifer Lopez. She doesn’t sample others music in each track like Destiny’s Child star Beyonce Knowles. Britney’s lone track with rappers features the Ying Yang Twins. Certainly they are not your typical collaborators. Southern rap is just now starting to get a chance on radio.
‘In The Zone’ has many sounds. Reggae, trance, techno are all incorporated with hot beats. It’s definitely not your tried and true radio fodder.
She’s predicted to sell over 400,000 copies in her second week though. That’s quite a bit more than her other competitors in their first. Time will tell if this album will appeal to the masses.
I totally agree with what this newspaper said. Britney’s album is fun, sexy and the perfect music to go out and have a good time to. Unlike other artists, Britney doesn’t see the need to change her image overnight and come back as some hard ass wannabe. Britney, like it or not, has mostly stayed the same and keeps giving her fans exactly what we want. Though her music has matured as she has grown, Britney still knows how to get a party going and come out on top.
