YM spoke with Ashlee Simpson in the latest issue. “I used to be too shy to sing in front of people,” she said. “I was scared I wouldn’t be good enough. So I’d wait till everyone was out of the house, and then I’d go to my room and sing.” While everyone else was copying Mariah Carey, Ashlee looked up to Alanis Morisette. “‘Jagged Little Pill’ was my first album,” Simpson revealed. “I bought it without my parents knowing when I was 11. My mom was mad that it had the F-word on it, so when my friends bought me tickets to the concert, she wouldn’t let me go. I was so angry that I said the F-word, and my mom washed my mouth out with soap.” She also said that she looks up to Fiona Apple and Joan Jett.
