July 20, 2002 – Arista just can’t stop putting out press releases praising the sales and $$ Avril Lavigne is bringing in to the label and its president and CEO LA Reid. Avril’s ‘Let Go’ has surpassed an all-time Soundscan record this week to become the first debut album by an artist in recent memory (i.e. not a soundtrack or ‘hits’ compilation) to post 5 consecutive weeks of increased sales since its June 4th release. Reid has dubbed the young star as “the best new artist of this year.”
Avril Lavigne Wasn’t Feeling It Being Helped Writing Album
July 19, 2002 – Lamont Hilliard of Groovevolt.com chatted with Avril Lavigne who has suddenly become hugely popular after being unheard of just two months ago. Avril explained her decision to create her own music rather than relying on help from others saying, “I started working with these really talented people, but I just wasn’t feeling it; the songs weren’t representative of me. Then they started talking about having people write for me, but I had to write myself. I had to do my music. Avril Lavigne Mocks Lip-Synchers
July 19, 2002 – Avril Lavigne tells Gavin Edwards of Rolling Stone that she got herself in trouble when she performed at a radio station concert in Orlando and mocked some of the other participants – such as O-Town and Aaron Carter — for lip-syncing their sets. Avril says organizers tried to pull the plug on her set after her comments. “I cursed out the station, and it turned into a tiny riot.”
Avril Lavigne Continues Album Sales Surge
July 18, 2002 – While Avril Lavigne has seen an equal position in the album charts with ‘Let Go’, her upward sales momentum continued last week as she finished at #4 in the charts, clearing 147,000 copies of ‘Let Go’. Topping the charts was Nelly’s new album ‘Nellyville’ while Red Hot Chili Peppers got #2 with ‘By The Way’ and Eminem continues to hold strong with ‘The Eminem Show’. Marc Anthony also has a sales jump as ‘Mended’ rose from #49 to #31, with sales of 29,000.
