Extra spoke with Us Weekly’s Ken Baker about the steamy on-stage kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna. Baker says, “They have been long-time admirers and, in the weeks leading up to the VMAs, they became very close friends.” The magazine also added that Jennifer Lopez was asked to perform in Madonna and Britney’s kiss off, but Jennifer blocked the idea because she didn’t want to wear a wedding dress so close to her actual wedding date with Ben Affleck, opening the door for backup Christina Aguilera.

Ok…i understand the “famous kiss” was a big thing, I mean the former “pop diva” kisses the new pop divas….what I don’t understand is why people are still talking about this? the VMA’s were like a week ago and the main hype is still over this kiss….i myself strive to ask, who cares anymore? sad thing is, this “famous kiss” will be continuously mentioned for weeks and weeks to come

Yea, I doubt they’re close if they only became friends a couple weeks ago, but this is so cool for Britney, since she’s idolized her since she was a baby. This is probably very surreal for her. I see their relationship as a ‘Mother/Daughter’ type of thing, with Madonna giving her lots of advice and Britney looking up to her. But it’s so amazing that Brit could say ‘I’m friends with Madonna’. Oy, I’m rambling… :)-

I think they were friends before. I read something in the paper that Madonna really admired Britney and had her tee-shirt on. And she stated she thought she was talented. She wanted to do stuff with her. No one really knows the extent of anyone’s friendship really.
They were always friends. Madonna has always been a fan of Britney and Britney of Madonna. Remember when they wore shirts with each others name’s on it? Plus they have been spotted together in the past, (dinning, shopping or whatever).
