Michael Coren of the Toronto Sun weighed in on the popularity of Avril Lavigne, much of which is fueled by the perception that she is the ‘Anti-Britney’. Coren writes, “If one is honest about it, the awful Spears is in many ways more authentic than the allegedly ordinary Lavigne. Do we really think that painting chipped short fingernails is any more profound than painting manicured long fingernails? Well, teenagers have been made to think so by the old guys who run the music business and write the music stories. They have swallowed the whole line about Avril having street credibility and relevance because she wears baggy clothes, makes funny devil’s horns signs with her fingers and yells rather than pouts.”
