Carlton Says Avril’s Image Is Instrumental To Her Success

took part in a chat on MSN Tuesday and was asked if she thinks that a person has to have a certain look nowadays to be able to go far in their music. “Yeah and it’s unfortunate,” she said. “You see new girls come out and I think that Avril, who I know is a sweet girl, her image is instrumental to her success right now. If you take it away, I think you should be able to be stripped down and come out in a gray sweatshirt and jeans and still have as big of an impact. So I think you should be able to use it to your advantage but can do without. I think it should be all about the music. I’m still one of the few people who write their own music.”

Update: Following her chat on MSN earlier this week, Vanessa Carlton wanted to clarify her thoughts on Avril Lavigne. Carlton wrote on her official message board Wednesday, “Hey guys. I read the chat. Chats shouldn’t be typed, cause stuff always reads differently compared to being spoken. To all you Avril fans: I seriously adore her. I’m proud that she stood up to her label and controls the way she dresses. I do stand behind the fact that it is unfortunate that your image means so much, but that’s the way it is. Rock on.”
