Ashlee Simpson Gives Just-Push-Play Show In Richmond

Melissa Ruggieri of the Richmond Times Dispatch reviewed ’s concert on Thursday (June 29) before about 4,000 mostly pre-pubescent girls at Innsbrook’s FasMart Pavillion. She writes, “…the obvious goal of Simpson’s handlers is to divert attention from her flat, raspy voice by having her project an engaging, effervescent presence when singing. Last night she sweated, repeatedly hopped on platforms flanking each end of the stage and strutted across a wrought-iron staircase with unflagging energy. But even with her two hopefully well-paid backup singers following her on the verses as well as the choruses, Simpson has no voice to control.”

New Material, Same Madonna

Mattew Hays of The Globe and Mail reviewed ’s concert on Wednesday night (June 21) at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Hays writes, “ seemed intent on proving something with her Confessions tour: that she’s still beholden to her worshipping fans (Montreal’s two nights sold out in under two hours — a record), that she still knows how to have fun (despite parenthood and the religious conversion) and that she remains culturally germane. To accomplish that, she needed to captivate, to provide exhilaration, to nod to her past while maintaining the aura of an artist whose best is before her. She delivered.”

Luck Has Run Out For Lindsay Lohan

Heather Seebach of the University of Maryland’s Diamondback Online reviewed ’s new movie and wasn’t impressed. “Now, after a laughable music career, endless tabloid controversies and that stupid car movie, L.Lo has finally worn out her welcome,” Seebach writes. “Her latest juvenile effort, ‘Just My Luck’, places the teen idol in familiar situations with predictable outcomes. And worst of all, it’s completely boring.” Read more.

Hilary Duff’s A Great Cheerleader

Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian was on hand for ’s concert at Hammersmith Apollo in London, England on Thursday (April 27). She writes, “Duff isn’t much of a singer (certainly not enough of one to compete with the rocky racket her band made), and didn’t even attempt to dance, but she’s a great cheerleader. Inexhaustibly bubbly and with the sprite-like quality of a young Kylie, she kept the place fizzing with excitement.” Read more.

Walters called the show “predictably formulaic and painstakingly choreographed, and it’s a little difficult to forget that underneath Duff’s stylized indie-girl image is a star of stage and screen dying to get out.”
