May 13, 2006 – News & Observer reports Chris Daughtry of McLeansville was sent home from ‘American Idol’ Wednesday night, ending North Carolina’s hopes for a homegrown winner this year. Daughtry, 26, a hard rock singer, was regularly picked by entertainment writers and odds makers as the winner of the top-rated Fox talent show. But he received the lowest amount of viewer votes out of four finalists for his Tuesday-night renditions of two Elvis Presley songs.

“I think the elephant scene at the end, because I just think it looks exactly like I’m there, and it’s just very funny,” he said. “And their reactions are very funny, it’s kind of embarrassed laughter and they’re so repressed, that kind of English person in that age… I don’t know when it was… In the ’70s, I think, they’re just so repressed as people and you can just see it in their body language, and it’s just hysterical.”
