While the Lycos 50 chart of top search queries shows Clay Aiken consistently in the top 5, and at #2 this week, deeper evidence shows that the singer is not nearly as popular online as that list indicates, pointing to the ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up’s faithful fans artificially inflating his search interest. Yahoo owned pay-per-search engine Overture’s list of top Clay searches for the month of November show ‘Clay Aiken’ received 204,736 searches for the month, far behind Britney Spears, who got over 3 million searches, or even ‘Idol’ season one champ Kelly Clarkson, who got 627,000 searches — three times that of Aiken. Clay’s most popular song was the seasonal ‘Merry Christmas With Love’, followed by ‘The Way’. His most frequent misspelling was Clay Akin with 4,748 searches, followed by Clay Aikens with 2,384 searches.
