Before I started writing this piece I wanted to be fair and balanced. Last year my favorite CD unquestionably was ‘Justified’ but after comparing Justin Timberlake’s debut to his former band mate, JC Chasez’s ‘Schizophrenic’ I noticed something. Both CDs have two distinct styles on got critical acclaim for his work and the other hot off the coat tails of a much publicized break up gained mainstream success.

Don’t get me wrong Justin’s solo attempt was different and better than anything *NSYNC and previously done. The lyrics and beats were hot but the one thing Justin was missing, street credit, he gained by using his very public break up with now ex-girlfriend Britney Spears. The buzz on his album was huge after the break-up because we all knew he was going to write about it. Everyone rushed out to get his CD and read the liner notes to see and hear what happened in their relationship. And although I must admit the production of the album was amazing Justin used high priced producers to buy that sound.

On the flip side let’s look at JC’s solo effort. We all know Jive Records bread and butter is Britney. She makes them millions every year. Unfortunately for other artists on Jive like JC, they get little to no promotion. This became apparent when it was first announced JC was doing a solo project. First the date of the release changed several times leaving fans confused. Secondly, they released his video for his first single way before the album was released. In some respects that’s a good thing because his name and image as a solo artist was out there but by time his CD actually hit stores the video was no longer on TRL or anything high profile shows. Thirdly, his CD has been in stores since February with no new video or single. Why is this? Once they noticed first week sales were below expectations don’t you think they would want to put out another single to get people interested again?

Finally unlike Justin, JC used lesser known producers to make his album and did it without the help of a controversy. I’m still completely taken back by the fact that JC has received positive review after review and yet his CD sales or minimal. On the other hand Justin does little to expand the spectrum of music and yet gets all the fame and attention. I know JC’s not looking for ‘mainstream’ success again, he just wanted to make an album that he could be proud of but his album surpassed my expectations. This is just my opinion and I’m prepared for the backlash.
