Edna Gundersen’s No Fan Of Ashlee Simpson

Music critic Edna Gundersen took part in a Q&A with readers on USA Today’s website on Tuesday (July 27), where she was asked about Ashlee Simpson’s debut ‘Autobiography’. “I’m not wild about Ashlee at all,” she said. “I’d give it a C minus. And I’m just astonished that her album is going to debut at No. 1 in Billboard this week, unless Van Halen pulled in a miraculous surge of fans on Sunday. The single is catchy enough but nothing special. She’s cashing in on her big sister’s celebrity, milking an MTV opportunity and apparently conning enough consumers to clobber the chart. I don’t get it, frankly.” She wasn’t much kinder when a reader asked why she thought accounted for the success of “poor singers” like Britney Spears or Janet Jackson. “Uh, silicone? It’s the video age,” she responded. “I think singing ability takes a back seat to belly dancing skills.” Check out the entire transcript here.
