Glenn Gamboa of Newsday weighed in on the increasing popularity of t.A.T.u. and their whole teenage lesbian angle may just be an act, a calculated attempt to design a group for guaranteed success. Gamboa says, “This kind of blatant manipulation for sales is nothing new to music. Because musicians have an easier time limiting their access to the public and controlling their image than stars in other fields, pop music – from Marilyn Manson to Milli Vanilli and back again – lends itself better to these kinds of shenanigans.” He cautioned, “Just because the music industry can get away with this stuff, though, doesn’t mean that it should.”
