Is Vanessa Carlton Unhappy With Universal?

Charlie Craine of Hip Online chatted with where the singer sounded somewhat unhappy with her record label Universal, at least compared to Alicia Keys’ deal with J Records. When asked if she doesn’t like to be lumped in with other female artists playing their own instruments, she said, “I don’t consider myself part of it. Like Alicia Keys does write and play, but she is huge and successful. I don’t think if that happened that my label would have been as willing to get so behind me. But I plan on being around for a long time.”

Vanessa Carlton Updates Fans From London

July 6, 2002 – Vanessa is in London as well and told fans on July 4th: “Hey there! I’m in London, all by myself, in a strange hotel room. This is officially the first time that I have ever posted a message from my on laptop. Miracles do happen. Of course I’ve already lost the plug/ adapter thingy, but the actual computer is alive and well and sitting content underneath my fingers. I don’t feel lonely at the moment… it’s more like my room feels lonely. I think it’s bored. I slept four hours on the plane today. Glorious! Sleep is great. I’m so excited that you guys like the OD [‘Ordinary Day’] video. I was freezing my ass off the whole time! I get to play the song, just me and my keys, at the MTV Beach House on the 16th. Much love to all fans and Nessaholics. Peace, Vanessa.”

Carlton Says Magazine Mentions Flattering But Weird

July 5, 2002 – Vanessa Carlton spoke with the Toronto Sun’s Jane Stevenson about her being honored by Rolling Stone as one of the “Top 10 Artists To Watch in 2002.” Vanessa said, “That was exciting (Rolling Stone’s praise) ’cause that was the first time I was ever in a magazine, and for a reason like that, (it’s) definitely flattering. But it’s weird. I don’t really buy my own press, ever, even if it’s good. I don’t feel good unless I have a great show. That makes me feel good. Being on a list or not being on a list, it doesn’t affect me any. But it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it.”
