Tony Norman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sounded off on Michael Jackson’s blasting of Sony Music wondering where he’s been when the millions were rolling in while the problem was still evident years ago. “While R&B legends Mary Wells and Big Joe Turner died penniless at a time the record industry was lavishing Michael Jackson with obscene wealth, he insists on identifying himself with the plight of helpless predecessors who’ve yet to receive a single royalty check,” Norman argued. “Charities like the Rhythm and Blues Foundation wouldn’t exist if the industry would quit robbing its pioneers to spend millions promoting failed projects like Jackson’s mediocre ‘Invincible’ album. He’s a brilliant performer, but he’s had nothing to say for 15 years. The guys who run Sony may be ruthless pirates, but ‘Jacko’ was first mate on that particular bandit ship for more than two decades.”
