Steppin’ Out magazine’s Chaunce Hayden recently spoke with Jessica Simpson and asked the singer about comparisons to Britney Spears, whom Hayden told Simpson had become almost a joke because it’s so much more about her sex image than it is her music. “That’s what works for her,” Simpson responded. “That’s Britney’s thing. She’s a very sexy person. That’s the way she chooses to sell her career.” As for Britney skewing music towards sex first, music second, unlike someone like Jewel, Simpson said, “Yeah, I miss the Jewel who used to sing in wife-beater shirts and jeans with just her guitar on stage. That’s what I want to be. Music should not be about your outfit. It shouldn’t be about what you’re wearing or what your hair looks like. It shouldn’t be about your image. It should be about the lyrics and the melody. It should be about what’s in your soul.”
