John Mayer Loves His First Guitar

John Mayer spoke with Teen People about the first guitar he bought at 18, which he still uses today, a Fender Strat he bought for $1,100. “I started working at a gas station to save money – I got up to about $850 and I couldn’t wait any longer, so I traded some stuff in.” And now, despite the fact that he has a collection of 40 guitars, he still prefers his original purchase. “At this point in my career, everyone wants to give me a free guitar, and the male ego part of me is loving it,” he admitted. “I don’t salivate over [just] anything that has six strings. I logged thousands of hours on this guitar. If I lost it, I would be devastated.”
