John Mayer Fans Too Young To Identify With Songs

December 14, 2002 – Kristin White of the Georgetown Hoya reviewed the John Mayer show that went down late last month at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. White writes, “He came out of the gates slow, sitting down to sing ‘Victoria.’ But that would be the last time Mayer sat down all night. The throng of screaming girls behind me went crazy during ‘Why Georgia,’ but I seriously doubt that any of them fully understood the quarter-life crisis of which he sings. That seemed to be the theme of the night. While most of the crowd was familiar with his songs, both old and new, most fans seemed too young to really identify with what he was singing about.”

John Mayer’s Coolest Thing About 2002

November 22, 2002 – John Mayer shared with Rolling Stone the coolest thing that happened to him this year. “I was going to Berklee College of Music in 1997,” Mayer said. “My mom and dad would give me $250 a month to spend, but I started overdrawing from the bank, so I was below broke. My dad sent me a check for $250 and wrote, ‘John, remember me when you go platinum.’ I held onto that note through everything. Two days ago, he got his platinum plaque with that very piece of paper inside the glass.”
