Jay Leno joked during his Tonight Show monologue on Thursday night, “How many watched the Grammys last night? I was gonna call it ‘The Grannies.’ You know, performances by Madonna, Sly Stone, Steven Tyler. More like ‘The Grannies’. … Well, congratulations to Kelly Clarkson. She won two Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. And she thanked so many people — her publicist, her manager, her fans, the people who made it possible, her record company. Wasn’t she on some kind of little talent show? [Laughter] Did she forget that? I don’t know what’s going on. … Actually, ‘American Idol’ beat the Grammys in the ratings last night, proving that viewers would rather see regular people of doing a bad job of singing than famous people do a good job of lip-synching.”
