Madonna’s ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor’ An American Flop?

Contributed anonymously: Over the past couple of months fans of pop diva have been blubbering about the artist’ new album ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor’, declaring it as her best work to date. They even went as far as comparing her album to that of song stress Mariah Carey with popdirt being filled with articles comparing the two divas. However, American sales if anything is to going by show that Madonna’s recent album is not doing well, she is yet to go platinum although it peaked at the number one spot! On the other hand, her supposed rival Mariah Carey’s ‘Emancipation of Mimi’ is still doing better than Madonna’s ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor’ on the Hot 200 albums at number 22 while Madonna’s is at number 56! Not that this is a comparison between these two greatest artist of our times but it is actually my way of pointing out the fact that as much as Madonna fans say Mariah is a flop they should think again!

Madonna Encourages Hillary Clinton To Run For President

March 8, 2006 – Out magazine caught up with Madonna for a Q&A and asked the singer what she thought about Hillary Clinton’s supposed presidential ambitions. “She should go for it, definitely,” the Material Girl responded. “I don’t think maybe now is her time or the Democrats’ time, but she should certainly go for it. You’ve got to start somewhere in terms of women leading the U.S. But Americans are so afraid of that. In Europe and Asia and elsewhere, women have ruled over millions; it’s not an abstract or frightening or out-of-the-box concept. But in America, men are still afraid of women. And women, I don’t think, trust women. I find that amazing.” The transcript at has since been removed.

Madonna Wants A Home In Israel

March 8, 2006 – Jay Leno joked during his Tonight Show monologue on Tuesday night, “According to the New York Post, Madonna is looking to buy a home in Israel. Today, the PLO told Israel, ‘Okay, you can have the land back. Okay, whatever.’ Madonna in Israel. You thought her fake English accent was bad, wait until she starts talking Yiddish. Oh, my God!”

COADF has sold millions world wide already. shes doing amazingly in Europe. I’m not sure about the other continents. yes, the album has (to some extent) flopped in the U.S. but that’s because all they wanna hear is the same old hip hop and r’n’b that’s becoming so commercial it puts the late 90’s bubblegum pop to shame! is 50 cent the new Britney?

The much bigger flop out of the two is obviously TEOM. COAD has sold many more copies in its first 4 months of release then TEOM did. COAD has already sold over 7 million copies worldwide and by the end of it’s reported 5 to 6 singles being released it will probably double that and then some.

This whole Mariah/Madonna thing has gotten completely out of hand and is just lame. Everyone with a brain knows the reason for the comparative success of either album has far more to do with the state of radio airplay in their respective countries than the quality of output for either woman. Let’s face the facts – the type of dance-pop for which Madonna is famous and for which COADF was heralded as a “return to form” gets no airplay in the States. It’s natural place would be Top 40 Radio and there it is dead. Furthermore, there is no “dancepop” movement among singers this side of the Atlantic to warrant its own specialty “genre” of radio station. In Euroope, pop radio is far more diverse. There aren’t the 5000 various genres of radio formats and so any single with a “hook” is a candidate for airplay. Also, dance pop has been a European staple for decades and has the same place there as hip-hop does here. The results are predictable. Given Madonna’s growing distance from America and her musical style, the album was bound not to succeed here except with her hardcore fans, dance music aficionados, and Europhiles. For Mariah, her decreasing success worldwide (including America) the last few years called for a revamping of style. Since her natural talent was as an rnb singer, it made perfect sense to market herself for the states. Mimi was geared to blend her rnb with hiphop influences and the formal worked big here but produced a yawn overseas. What some lambs overlook is that if she had continued with the melodramatic overblown pop anthems she was noted for with her former hubby, she would have had a major failure here as well. It is to her credit that she had the good sense to revamp her style for her comeback. When its over the sales of both albums will be comparable. Most of Madonna’s will be in Europe and most of Mariah’s in the states. Both women have geared themselves to the format where they are strongest and the respective results are an indication of that. So what’s wrong with either woman playing to their strengths?

COADF didn’t flop anywhere so is TEOM…Its just that COADF is phenomenal in Europe while TEOM is phenomenal in the U.S. As to the bigger selling album…we have to wait & see folks but I have a gut feeling COADF will edge TEOM this year.
