Nick Moir of The Daily Telegraph profiled Mariah Carey and his thoughts on EMI possibly wanting to sever ties with the singer. Moir writes, “I would actually question whether, even at the ripe old age of 31, Carey is really past her sell-by date. She is far from a stereotypical pop star. Despite the best efforts of make-up artists, lighting engineers and even plastic surgeons, she has never been able to rely on her rather plain appearance to hold attention. Her appeal has always centered on her extraordinary vocal abilities, and her crowd-pleasing tendency to soar up to the highest note possible and launch into the kind of vocal acrobatics that would make Pop Idol’s Darius weak at the knees. It is a voice that has provided inspiration to a whole new generation of American pop singers, including Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.”
