USA Today music writer Elysa Gardner spoke with readers in an online chat on Tuesday, where she was asked her thoughts on Mariah Carey. “I’ve interviewed Mariah several times, and I think that what people don’t get about her is that she’s really an insecure and self-critical person — or has seemed that way to me,” she responded. “She’s less a diva than a perfectionist, I think, and is very easily hurt when people talk trash about her. That can really affect someone’s longevity, if the person isn’t thick-skinned … But I think it’s beyond question that Mariah is the most influential female pop singer of the past 15 years. Listen to any female singer with chops under the age of 25 — Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce — and you’ll hear the influence.” Read the entire chat transcript here.

Mariah’s always been that way, she is just very critical of herself and puts a lot of pressure on herself. But I do agree with Elysa that she is most definitely the most influential female pop star of the last 15 years, she’s been doing this thing for 13 years and she’s already done things that others haven’t even done in 20 years.
Mariah influences no one. That’s why all her albums were left off Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 albums ever. Her music is disposable pop. It’s cheesy and lame. People don’t even consider Mariah an artist. For most of her career she was a puppet and even admitted to being one. When she did break away her career spiraled downward to such a horrendous level that it will never recover. Mariah is nothing but a follower and needs someone like Tommy to keep it going. Without someone pulling the strings her career will descend to an even more pitiful mess than it is now.
HA HA HA!!! Like Madonna, who obviously doesn’t have a fraction of the fanbase that Mariah does!!! You can call Mariah’s remix CD a flop if you want, but now Madonna has 2 HUGE flop under her belt, first “American Life” flopped horrendously now her remix CD “Remixed and Revisited” can’t even debut on the top 100 album charts!!! She sucks, ending up in that spot just shows like 5,000 people bought the album and that’s it!!! And weebongo, don’t say it didn’t do well because it’s an EP because that’s BS!!! Matchbox Twenty just released an EP and it debuted in the mid-40′s. Mariah’s career is BETTER since she left Tommy, she’s had her most critical success since leaving him and 2 of her best albums have come out since she left him, “Butterfly” and “Charmbracelet” and is STILL going multi-platinum with every album.
Madonna’s EP did fine it sold between 20-25K. For an EP those sales are great. EP’s are similar to Maxi Singles and basically the same price. Maxi’s go for 5.99-7.99, EP’s 7.99-9.99. EP’s never debut high on the Billboard Chart. Mariah’s Double Disc Remix Album that was in the bargain bins for a cheap ass price of 11.99 and still sold crap. For an Album it’s sales and chart position were atrocious especially considering that each CD only came out to a pathetic 6 dollars.
Mariah has influenced more then 40% of New Artist’s and they always praise her in interview’s. Every DJ that I know even if they don’t like her admits she’s the best Singer in the world. Mariah isn’t pop at all and she never was she has always had creative music that mixes a lot of styles into one pure sound. All you hater’s say the cheesiest crap to put her down when there’s proof that everything you say is on big fat lie of jealousy!
She might have 2 flops, but, not all fans buy all her stuff. I, for one, don’t buy something if I don’t like it. There are some of her fans, that remain fans and just don’t buy something to support her. And Madonna has a history of flops- Erotica and then bouncing back. And she did lose fans after the sex book. As for Mariah, she had to reduce her venues because she can’t fill arenas, and she couldn’t even fill all of those theatre ones. I heard her added US dates that are small venues, less than 5,000, can’t sell out.
Actually, its Whitney Houston that influenced Mariah in the “big voice genre” And yeah she is pop, but, that is crap about the genre. Beatles were basically pop too. And she wasn’t the first to mix genres.
