Friedman Responds To Sony Denial Of Jacko Buyout
March 8, 2002 – Well anyone that read the denial from Sony earlier this week to Variety could figure out it was weasel-worded that they wouldn’t ‘buy-out’ Michael Jackson’s share of the Beatles catalog. Foxnews.com’s Roger Friedman, who originally broke the story, said, “Indeed, this is mighty good spin-doctoring on Sony’s part since they wouldn’t have to buy the catalog – they would actually be foreclosing on it.” As for how that might shake out publicly, Friedman offered, “Merely taking the Beatles’ song catalog from Jackson could be a publicity nightmare for Sony, which could be accused of making and breaking its onetime megastar. Look for Rowe to work out some deal in which everyone saves face, and Jackson can still live in the style to which no one else is accustomed.” Read more.
Sony Denies Effort To Buy Out Jacko’s Beatles Collection

A company spokesman told Variety, “We are not in discussions with Mr. Jackson over the sale of his share of the ATV catalog (which includes the Lennon-McCartney compositions) … these rumors are completely baseless.” This may have been a carefully worded response, as the report was they were going to call Jackson on his loan, not buy out his share.
