As we reported earlier, ‘Spider-Man’ star Tobey Maguire got the phone number of ‘American Idol’ finalist Ryan Starr at a recent event. Now MSNBC’s Jeannette Walls reports the actor has shown he has more than just a passing interest. “He got her phone number,” says the insider. “He’s been calling her.” No comment yet from Maguire’s spokeswoman.

Simon Cowell Weighs In On TRL Artists
The ‘American Idol’ judges stopped by to critique the artists on MTV”s Total Request Live on Monday. Simon started it off by making a nasty remark about Shakira’s ‘Objection (Tango)’ saying, “Right, that sounds like Ricky Martin with a high voice. Out of 10 we’ll give the song 2.” Later, Simon was asked who doesn’t really cut it on the TRL countdown. “Vanessa carlton for being totally miserable,” he said. “Cheer up! You know, it’s a lovely day, sunny, you live in America, be happy!” As for Britney Spears and her ‘Boys’ remix, Simon blasted, “Okay. That was, uhm, Britney Spears with an absolutely apalling song. Britney, go back to the school uniform. Go back to Max Martin and write some decent songs ’cause that song is terrible. Terrible!” It wasn’t all negative remarks from Cowell though as he commented about Avril Lavigne, “I really like her. You know what she’s real! Really makes a change.”

Garver Says Russian Space Rides Are All About The Money
John Kelly of Florida Today spoke with Lori Garver, an aerospace executive and ex-NASA official who was bidding for a Soyuz ride until *NSYNC star Lance Bass showed up with big money in hand, something she couldn’t match. Lori says she doesn’t hold any ill will towards Bass though. “The Russians were very clear on this: It is all about the money. It has always been all about the money,” she said. “Many people have said too bad Lance got selected over me. That’s not it. It’s whoever has the money. I’ve always understood that. I never felt it was unfair.”

Reporter Invited On Roller Coaster With Nick Carter
Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter was in Sweden recording his upcoming solo album with Max Martin but before heading home he had a a visit to Gröna Lund in Stockholm. Reporter Anna Hansson of Aftonbladet was invited by Nick to go on the amusement park’s roller coaster with him. While he thought the roller coaster was small compared to ones in American amusement parks, he exclaimed, “Wow, this is really good!” Check out photos of Nick on the ride here.

Whitney Houston AWOL ‘Whatchulookinat’ Video Shoot
Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com has new details on Whitney Houston’s upcoming album, unfortunately not good news for Whitney fans. The singer decided at the last minute that everything intended for her first new video in two years, ‘Whatchulookinat’, was wrong — particularly the script, so she didn’t show up to the shoot. The song’s cold reception from radio and reviewers may mean the song won’t be the first out on her new album, an album which is being plagued by delays over Whitney missing studio appointments. MSNBC’s Jeannette Walls reports execs at Mariah Carey’s new Island Def Jam are urging the singer to drop her slutty outfits. “In the last few years, she’s started looking and acting too provocatively,” says a source. “She wasn’t doing herself any favors. She shouldn’t try to look like Britney Spears. She has her voice going for her. They’ve told Mariah to re-think her image.” The source says the advice seems to have been effective. “Mariah’s not going to start wearing a potato sack, but [Lyor Cohen’s] advice really hit home.”

Paula Abdul Most Searched ‘American Idol’ Judge/Host
We ran down the guys and gals of ‘American Idol’, now we’ll look at the judges and hosts search engine interest. Paula Abdul leads the pack in searches on pay-per search engine Overture.com during the month of July, getting 27,398 searches, easily enough to beat out Simon Cowell who had 10,582 searches. Randy Jackson was the least searched for judge, getting fewer votes than show host Ryan Seacrest, but more votes than the other host Brian Dunkleman, who was the least searched of the five. Aerosmith Isn’t Making Records With Justin Or Britney
Dean Goodman of Reuters reports Aerosmith is hitting the road with Run-D.M.C. and Kid Rock which should help their fans forget the group performing a family-friendly version of ‘Walk This Way’ at last year’s Super Bowl along with Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Nelly and Mary J. Blige. Lead guitarist Joe Perry called the Super Bowl gig “another event in a long line of amazing events … But it’s not like we’re out doing records with her (Spears), or I’m playing guitar on (*NSYNC star) Justin Timberlake’s record or anything like that.”
