When Britney Spears was out partying for several months following the birth of her second son Jayden, people wondered: Where are her babies? Why isn’t she home with her newborn? Doctors tell The New York Daily News it is common for women with postpartum depression to try to avoid their children. “Depressed mothers don’t bond as well with their newborns,” says Dr. Stephan Quentzel, chief of primary-care psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center. “They may exhibit negligence. A mother who is lethargic and lacks motivation due to her illness may have trouble with cleaning and feeding and medical care for the infant on the most basic level.” A mother with postpartum may also neglect her appearance.
