Ratings Slide Prompts Talk Of ‘American Idol’ Changes

Though ‘American Idol’ is still an enormous hit, ratings have slipped this season. NBC’s Michael Okwu reported on what changes may be ahead for the FOX program on the ‘Today’ show after the network sent out a market research survey for viewers to provide their input on the show. Brian Alexander of People magazine said the show is now asking questions about whether there’s too much banter between the judges, if the audition shows lasted too many weeks, and which of the judges are important to the show. But music producer David Foster insisted that one person who has a safe job on ‘Idol’ is host Ryan Seacrest. “He’s an enterprise. he’s a brand,” Foster contended. Carly Smithson Discusses Her ‘American Idol’ Exit On ‘Today’

April 30, 2008 – Irish singer Carly Smithson captured a considerable following on ‘American Idol’ before being voted off last week. She visited the ‘Today’ show on Tuesday (April 29) to talk with co-hosts Al Roker and Natalie Morales about what’s next for her. “It’s nice to go out as a shock elimination,” Carly said after frequent appearances in the bottom three, only to get the boot the week she won praise from Simon Cowell. ‘American Idol’ Making Changes To Boost Ratings

April 29, 2008 – Conan O’Brien joked during his ‘Late Night’ monologue on Monday night, “‘American Idol’, their ratings have been slipping this year. They’re down a bit. So producers are thinking about making some changes to the show to make it more exciting. Try and – yeah, jazz it up a bit. Yeah, for example, from now on, contestants will be eliminated by a sniper.”

‘Today’ On Carly Smithson’s ‘American Idol’ Exit

Michael Johns Voted Off ‘American Idol’

April 11, 2008 – ‘American Idol’ fans are shocked over the ouster last night of Michael Johns, a favorite in the competition. NBC’s John Larson reported on the news for the ‘Today’ show, comparing his ouster to season five’s Chris Daughtry, with Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger opining that the early ouster helped Daughtry and implying it could benefit Johns as well.
