R.E.M. Singer On ‘The Kiss’
R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe was on Last Call with Carson Daly on Tuesday night and was asked about the kiss between Madonna and Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards back in August. Stipe said, “It seemed — it seemed inappropriate to me, on several levels. And I admire both of those women for the music that they write and for the — you know, in one case, anyway, Madonna, certainly, someone I respect for being a strong woman, at a time in American history when it’s not easy to be a strong woman. And she really stood up for something that she believed in, which was herself. And I think ‘Ray of Light’ is a brilliant, brilliant pop song. But I don’t think I need to see the two of them kissing on TV.”
