Shakira Before The VMAs

Shakira joined MTV News’ John Norris briefly before last night’s Video Music Awards in New York City. Read on for a brief transcript.

John: We have got the red carpet covered here at Rockefeller Center.
I’m John Norris in the middle of it all and joined by without a doubt one
of the most beautiful people in the house tonight. Shakira, how you doing
sp

Shakira: I’m good.

John: Welcome to the V.M.A.’S.

Shakira: Thank you so much.

John: First of all, congratulations. Seven nominations. Obviously you
were everywhere this year. Were you surprised at seven nominations?

Shakira: Of course. I can’t recover from the idea of seven nominations.
It’s amazing. I mean, I cannot believe it. I cannot believe it. I cannot
believe that a simple girl like me from Colombia is here among the greatest
artists in the pop world and participating on the stage with someone like
Wyclef. It’s all very exciting.

John: Now, of course, you and Wyclef were kind of a Pan-Caribbean thing,
Colombia. Tonight I understand there will be a little bit of Bollywood
in the performance. Is that right?

Shakira: Don’t give it away.

John: I don’t want to say too much, but something different, right?

Shakira: This song represents what I call the multicultural world that
we live in. I think that music and art are demonstrating that we can come
together culturally and that this is the moment where real interinterinter
– integration. There are so many sounds, like the Caribbean, like you
just said, from Haiti, from Colombia. This represents that. So today we
thought that it would be a cool idea to sort of bring other flavors, like
the classical Indian dance and the Bollywood concept, which is pretty exciting.

John: I am so looking forward to it. Have a great performance and a
great night and best of luck with everything tonight.

Shakira: Thank you so much. It’s a pleasure to be here.
