Richard Chang of the Orange County Register spoke with Shakira who admits she doesn’t “feel I’m a sex symbol. I don’t really have the dilemma that usually a sex symbol has, always feeling sexified.” She added, “In Latin America before, I don’t feel they considered me a sex symbol. All of a sudden, I come to America and it’s easier to be on the cover of a magazine. It can be a dangerous game. But I feel so confident about what I am as an artist. I’ve been a songwriter and a singer for a long time. The important thing — as a person, as an artist — is where I want to go, and the message I want to deliver.”
