David Hinckley of the New York Daily News reviewed the Shakira concert at Madison Square Garden last night and says the singer did something virtually unheard of in the pop world — she got political. Hinckley writes, “During ‘Octavia Dia,’ which she wrote several years ago, a deliberately crude video showed puppets of President Bush and Saddam Hussein playing chess. As the game moves on, they replace the chessmen with oil wells and weapons. They start to lose control, and as the song builds to a deafening wall of guitars, we see that the puppeteer is the Grim Reaper. Subtle it wasn’t. Neither was it ambiguous, and the crowd roared as a white dove flew across the video screen and the song crashed to an end.”
