The Sunday People was on hand as 20,000 Pop Idol contestants were cut down to 100, who were then battling for the final 50 spots. Judge Simon Cowell said, “I’ve sat through hundreds of auditions with so many untalented people. There will be 50 finalists, but I only like two so far.” Fellow judge Nicki Chapman added, “This is an entertainment show, but contestants should take it very seriously. It amazes me how people have come along and sung songs like ‘Nellie The Elephant’ or ‘The Wheels On The Bus’. They’re clearly not in it to win. We are looking for serious talent here and I’m positive we’ll find it.”
