Avril Lavigne Explains How She Got Here

Avril Lavigne chatted with MuchMusic at a free all-ages show in Vancouver earlier this week. Avril says her rebel punk-pop sound originated at church. “I started out in church and then I went on to sing some country music,” she said. “Then I started writing my own stuff which was a folkier kind of thing and then I just started to write the songs that you now know.” As for the tunes on her debut album ‘Let Go’, the singer traveled outside of her Ontario hometown for the songwriting process, with stops from New York to Los Angeles. “I learned a lot about the world, a lot about life,” she admits.

Michelle Branch And Vanessa Carlton Profiled

Sean Richardson of the Boston Phoenix profiled Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton ahead of their shows in the Boston area over next weekend. On Branch, he said, “As much as she doesn’t want to be Britney, she’s not treading a much riskier path. But at least she’s ready to play with the big girls.” As for Carlton, Richardson says, “Like Branch, she’s a talented musician with decent taste and a good songwriting ear. Carlton also seems especially willing to put herself on the line in her songs, and that bodes well for her future.” The story at bostonphoenix.com has since been removed.

Avril Lavigne Blasts Britney Spears

Chart Attack spoke with Avril Lavigne of Ontario who is currently prepping her debut album on Arista Records. When asked for her comments on fellow female musician Britney Spears, Avril blasted, “I mean, the way she dresses – would you walk around the street in a fu**in’ bra? I’m not trying to dis anyone, but with me, the clothes I wear onstage are the clothes I would wear to school or go shopping. I’m not gonna go up onstage and dress different. Britney Spears goes up onstage and dresses like a showgirl. She’s not being herself up there because she’s dancing like a ho. Is she ho? She says she’s a virgin. Y’know, it’s just not clicking. She’s doing one thing and saying another thing, y’know? It’s definitely not what I’m going to do.” Read more.
