Clay Aiken Talks About Fatherhood, Coming Out

‘Entertainment Tonight’ correspondent Jann Carl went one-on-one with , who talked candidly about being a doting daddy to his baby son Parker and about his decision to reveal that he is gay. The ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up also talked about why he decided to reprise his starring role of Sir Robin in Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’. “I think we’ve been not necessarily surprised,” Clay said of the reaction to his sexual preference revelation. “I hate to call it an announcement or anything. We kind of just avoided discussing things beforehand and just said fine. You do it the way the press likes to have it done, you like it to be sensationalized. But it’s been very natural I think, and we’ve been very surprised. Of course that first week I was terrified to come out here on stage, that first Friday, thinking ‘Just get ready for your bow, you’re gonna get booed.’ I was totally ready without question.” Watch it below the fold.

Kathy Griffin: It’s Great Clay Aiken Came Out

Clay Aiken in green pants

Windy City Times spoke with Kathy Griffin in a Q&A, asking the comedian about whether she felt vindicated with the news that ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up has finally come out of the closet. “I do. I am still hurt that I was not asked to be the babymomma,” Griffin said. “I am going to have to ask my own inner Clay on how to get over that.”

Told she was so right about the whole thing by interviewer Jerry Nunn, Griffin said, “Well, I think it’s really great that he came out. The picture of him holding the baby is such a powerful image because gay adoption is such a hot issue. He came out at a relatively young age. I very much applaud him for coming out at this time. He’s still facing the people on Broadway every night. He’s being honest with himself and his kid, and I think it’s great. Doesn’t mean that I am not going to make fun of him for the rest of my life, but I still think he’s great.” Read more.

Clay Aiken Explains Decision To Come Out & Prior Secrecy

Clay Aiken in a blue suit

is opening up about his decision to end the speculation about his sexuality and confirmed he is gay in an interview with People magazine. The ‘American Idol’ season two runner-up writes:

There are plenty of you who have anticipated this blog in hopes that I would “set the record straight” or “admit to lying for five years and apologize for it”. For that small group of people, I am afraid I will have to disappoint you. My decisions over the past five years have been made with lots of deliberation and at times even heartache. Always with concern for folks who might feel mislead. Don’t doubt that. But they have also been made as an attempt, not to hide my true self, but instead to allow myself the same liberties and rights that every single gay man and woman in the world should have… the right to determine for myself when I was ready to discuss my personal life. In as much as that, at times, was interpreted as misrepresentation, I feel badly. But I reserved that right for myself and I can’t say I regret it.
