Search interest in the Pop Idol runner up was actually higher in March than the show’s winner, , on pay-per search engine Overture.com. The stuttering singer received 52,699 searches during the month, about 15,000 more than Will. As for lyrical interest, there isn’t any – he’s only done covers to this point as he preps his album debut. The most popular misspelling was ‘Garath Gates’. The most searched web site was ggates.co.uk.

Will Young & Gareth Gates In Talks To Host Pop Idol 2

News of the World reports Pop Idol finalists and are in secret talks to host the second series of Pop Idol 2. The gig will be worth £600,000 to each star according to reports. An ITV insider revealed, “They’re in negotiations at the moment but it’s an obvious choice. They’ve become huge stars and would have great appeal hosting the show.”

Sources say that Gates’ album looks poised to be released before Will’s, and some speculate he’s being overlooked ever since he revealed that he was gay. The source said, “No one can believe that as the winner he won’t be releasing his album first. Gareth is their golden boy and all the attention is going on him. Will doesn’t seem fazed by it, but if he’s not careful he may well fall by the wayside.”

Pop Idol winner has conceded his number one spot to his rival days the official numbers come out. Will has had the top spot with his double A-side Evergreen/ Anything for three weeks but the debut single of his Pop Idol challenger sold 328,000 in the first day alone. Gates’ ‘Unchained Melody’ appears unlikely to beat Will’s for week sales record though. George Michael Concedes #1 To Gareth Gates

The Sun reports Pop Idol runner-up received a magnum of champagne and a note from pop legend George Micheal as a goodwill gesture before the two go head to head in the UK singles charts. A pal of Michael’s said he did it to express his admiration for him and wants to give the newcomer support, “He knows he can’t compete with someone who has been in such a popular TV show and he will be pleased if Freak gets into the top five.”
