Havana Brown On Fishbowl, Pitbull Collaboration, Janet Jackson Admiration

Havana Brown, seen here wearing lingerie, talks about Fishbowl, touring with big name artists, collaborating with Pitbull and growing up wanting to be like Janet Jackson

‘The Insider’ caught up with Havana Brown, talking with the Australian DJ and singer about how she got her start in music with the quickly disbanded group Fishbowl, going on tour with some big name acts, getting Pitbull to rap on her hit single ‘We Run The Night’, Mr. 305 being “incredibly cool and a gentleman” behind the scenes, plans to finish up an album soon and Havana’s admiration for Janet Jackson.

On the early days of her music career and the ups and downs that came with it, Havana said, “I’ve been deejaying for the last 5 or 6 years. Prior to that I’ve always been in music. I was in London. I had signed to a record label with a group. It was a group of three boys and me. It was more like The Fugees. That kind of sound. Actually mixed in with dance. A little bit ahead of its time, reggae, dance, R&B, but the group fell apart before we released. At that time, it was the most depressing time of my life. I discovered deejaying. In London I started deejaying at all the clubs that I could possibly get a gig at. It took off and I’ve been touring since then. I moved back to Australia. I’ve been touring with some major acts and I’ve released my first single, ‘We Run The Night’.”

On touring with artists like Britney Spears, she said, “They definitely were as big as it gets. Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, Rihanna. Pitbull. I’m on Pitbull’s tour right now in the States.”

On Pitbull jumping on ‘We Run The Night’, she said, “It’s a complete honor to have him on the track, because I’ve been deejaying for six years and ever since I started deejaying, I’ve been playing his music and he’s constantly been making people move. I released ‘We Run The Night’ in Australia over a year ago and I was on tour with Enrique and Pitbull and performing it for the first time. He heard the track and he loved it. RedOne was already on board and he really wanted to do a version. We incorporated Pitbull and that was it. He was one of the first people, if not the first, to actually start rapping on some classic old house tunes. He really started a trend.”

On Janet Jackson, Havana enthused, “When I saw her when I was like 6-years-old, that was it. That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be her. I just love her energy, the stage presence, the dancing. It’s a big show and the music was always awesome as well. On top of that, the production and choreography, it was just perfect.”

Havana Brown Fears Being Lost At Sea

Havana Brown exposes her armpits

Havana Brown caught up with Jordan of 103.5 KISS FM in Chicago during Fantabuloso. The Australian DJ and pop singer discussed how people can expect a lot of bass during her show, how she’s not had a place to call home lately, her phobia of being in deep water (unless she’s on a boat) and Pitbull.

On the bass she uses during her set:

That was the aim. I think the cops will be coming soon. You gotta shut this venue down.

On where she calls home:

I’m a bit of a gypsy at the moment. I’m living out of a suitcase. I kind of have no home.

On swimming with sharks:

I’m not a fan of water and deep water. My parents actually live near the water and there’s something about it that scares the hell out of me. I think in a past life (I had a bad experience in the water), because one of my worst fears is being lost out at sea. Like a plane diving in the water and I’m stuck in the middle of the sea with sharks.

Havana Brown Discusses Pink Motel, Photo Shoots & Pitbull Language Barrier

Erika Ross of Young Hollywood caught up with the Australian DJ turned pop singer Havana Brown at the Pink Motel in Sun Valley during a photo session for her next EP, where she discussed having a say in photo shoot attire, ‘We Run The Night’, her hit collaboration with Pitbull, and subsequent tour with Mr. 305.

On the photo shoot location:

It’s beautiful. It’s such an awesome location. We’re shooting for my EP.

On dressing up for photo shoots:

I love it a lot. Yesterday we spent a few hours going through the clothes with a wonderful stylist. She has picked some amazing clothes and I was able to go through, it was like a girl’s dream come true, with all the jewelry, shoes and everything. I love it.

On having a say in what she wears:

Yeah, absolutely. I wouldn’t wear anything I didn’t want to wear. It definitely is my style, where I wanted to go with this shoot. Everything. I’m very much involved in every step of the way.

On touring with Pitbull:

It’s so much fun. Pitbull is such an awesome guy, like one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. I straight away asked him when I first saw him after the recording of ‘We Run The Night’, I’m like, “What does dale mean?” I had no clue. I don’t know any of the Spanish words he’s saying. When he speaks to you, he speaks in half English, half Spanish and you try to follow. I’m like, “I’m Australian. I don’t know what you’re saying.” He says it just means let’s go. I love it.

Havana Brown On DJing, LA & Lady Gaga Backstage Stare-Off

Havana Brown of Australia

Havana Brown was on ‘The Morning Show’, a breakfast program from her native Australia, meeting up with the DJ and singer on location in Los Angeles. They talked about her start as a DJ, on how she’s adjusting to living in LA, her “entourage”, the breakout success she’s enjoying as a pop singer and the awkward stare-off she had while touring with Lady Gaga.

On DJing:

I started about six years ago and I didn’t know any females that were doing it, but that wasn’t the real reason I started (to get famous). I started because I loved music and I enjoyed deejaying so much. Now there’s a lot of females out there, so it’s growing. Watch out, men!

On adjusting to Los Angeles:

I actually am. I’ve got some good friends here that I met in Australia that manage me and work with me. It feels a bit like a family here, so I’m feeling quite a bit at home, luckily, because I know LA can be quite difficult if you don’t know anyone.

On developing entourages:

You trust them. You become best friends, and you have each other. I’m very lucky that I have such a great support team around me.

On her singing career:

It’s going so well. We’ve released here in the States, and we’re about to go gold, which is 500,000 units here, and a million worldwide. It’s pretty incredible and I’m releasing an EP soon. I’ll be touring with Pitbull here in the States and in Australia in August. I’ll be releasing my third single their actually.

On her awkward stare-off with Lady Gaga:

Look, I’m a big fan of Gaga. I love her and she inspires me a lot. This was backstage at the Pussycat Dolls tour. She was supporting the Pussycat Dolls, and I was supporting the Pussycat Dolls as well. I had just come off stage, and I went backstage into my change room, and I could sense someone at the door. Just staring in. I didn’t look up straight away. I was talking to my manager and after a little while, I looked up and Lady Gaga was standing right at the door just staring at me. Just completely cold stare. It wasn’t nice. It wasn’t mean, but it was awkward.

‘One Way Trip’ Is Havana Brown’s Favorite Track From Her EP

Havana Brown wearing black leather pants

ARTISTdirect.com caught up with Havana Brown for an interview, where the Australian DJ and singer talked about the song ‘One Way Trip’, a song off the artist’s ‘When the Lights Go Out’ EP, out now on Universal Republic.

That was produced by Richard Vission, DJ Vice, and another Aussie actually, Sgt Slick. I co-wrote that with Nick (Clow) and Luciana (Caporaso). I don’t know, there’s something sexy about it. It’s lowering my register, and just very easy going. To me, that’s my favorite track on the EP. It’s very hard (to pick a favorite), I love every single song on that EP, but I like the element of the R&B and the dub step. It reminds me of TLC singing down that low.
