Kelly Clarkson Talks To Jay Leno

‘American Idol’ champ Kelly Clarkson was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday. Kelly, with her voice admittedly shot, talked to Jay about winning, how she ended up on the show on the verge of being broke, what she thinks about Simon Cowell, living together with the other contestants, having to sing right after she won, and more. Clive Davis Says Kelly Should Follow Celine’s Path

Access Hollywood caught up with J Records chief Clive Davis who weighed in on Kelly Clarkson’s win on ‘American Idol’ on Wednesday. Clive said, “I really think that Kelly was the rightful winner for tonight.” He did temper some of the praise given during the competition though. “There’s no one there who’s a Whitney Houston. There’s no one there that’s a Barbara Streisand — or the next Aretha Franklin.” Clive suggests Kelly “definitely has special and unique talents. The model for her is the incredible career that Celine Dion has. Kelly needs a team around her who understands her talent — that understands that today, you need edge in order to get on MTV and VH1.”

Simon Says Kelly Was The Better Singer Without Question

September 5, 2002 – ‘American Idol’ judge Simon Cowell told BBC News after last night’s ‘American Idol’ finale that there was an electric atmosphere at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, where Kelly Clarkson was voted the best of the show.

“Suddenly, where you shoot the Oscars, there they are, all of America’s watching, only one of them is going to win, but they were amazing,” he said. “It was a one sided competition as far as I was concerned because Kelly, without question, was the better singer.”

September 5, 2002 – Kelly Clarkson beat out Justin Guarini in Wednesday night’s ‘American Idol’ finale, as most expected, including all three of the show’s judges. Clarkson got 58% of the vote and finished the show with her soon-to-be-released single ‘A Moment Like This’. An emotional Clarkson had troubles at times singing the tune, apologizing to the crowd. Unfortunately, her pal Nikki McKibbon was allowed near the mic and decided to help out, reminding everyone why she was voted off last week.

August 31, 2002 – The New York Post reports Kelly was just about to sing “Happy Birthday” to a reporter at the press room of the MTV Video Music Awards when she realized her contract didn’t permit it, and apologetically noted, “I’m not allowed!”

Simon And Paula Pick Kelly To Win ‘American Idol’

August 30, 2002 – Entertainment Tonight spoke with ‘American Idol’ judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, each who thinks Kelly Clarkson will be the big winner next week. “If I had to bet, Kelly,” Cowell said. “It could all change, but that’s who I think today.” Paula Abdul added, “The thing with Kelly, she could sing ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ and it would be a No. 1 single. [But] I think Justin is still right there. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye.”

Justin Guarini’s Mother OK After Surgery

‘American Idol’ runner-up Justin Guarini told Access Hollywood last night that his mom was doing fine after emergency surgery. Kathy Guarini went under the knife last Friday to remove a “large mass” in her stomach area and a kidney. The surgery forced Kathy to miss the finale last night, but Guarini commented, “She needed to go through what she needed to go through. It was one of those things where I was focused, I stayed determined, and I have a lot of faith.”

September 4, 2002 – Former Atlanta Police Chief Eldrin Bell used to be the famous face in the family, but he tells Rodney Ho of Cox News Service that now his son Justin Guarini the roles have reversed. “I’m no longer Eldrin Bell,” says Bell, 67. “I’m Justin’s dad. He tells me, ‘Dad, I used to be around you, and everyone called me Bell’s kid. Now it’s the other way around.’ I’m enjoying it.”

September 1, 2002 – Michael Giltz of the New York Post is predicting the likely winner for this week’s ‘American Idol’ final between Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini will be Justin. “Millions of loyal teenybopper fans have ensured Guarini’s safe passage through each knockout round of the show by registering millions of telephone votes in his favor every week,” he said. “Clarkson’s fans have done the same, but the depth of their loyalty will be fully tested this week.”

He summed up the final that pits Justin Guarini against Kelly Clarkson saying, “You’ve got Justin who has all the charm, the looks, and the girl’s rooting for him. Versus Kelly, who’s like the homegrown favorite, a hometown girl.” He added, “The pressure really is on Justin. He has got to sing out of his socks.” Video has since been removed.

August 27, 2002 – Access Hollywood spoke with Justin’s mother Katherine Guarini, who alerted her son to the ‘American Idol’ auditions that have launched his sudden fame. “We never, I guess, fully anticipated the enormity of him getting that audition, going out to Pasadena and being in ‘American Idol’. ‘American Idol’ has, essentially, launched our son’s career,” said Katherine. Justin is extremely grateful for the support he has received from his loved ones. “My friends and family — I’m so thankful for them. They’ve been nothing but supportive. It’s so nice and just has given me every reassurance that I have ever needed.”
