Kina Grannis Discusses Super Bowl Ad, Being Major Label-less

January 18, 2012 – Kina Grannis spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about her decision to give up a major label deal with Interscope and go at it alone.

“Major labels still have a role, but people can just do it without them now,” Grannis explained.

As for becoming an overnight star after winning a Doritos Super Bowl contest and having her music played during the most watched television event in 2008, Grannis said, “Getting your music video played during the Super Bowl is pretty amazing. But the biggest thing going into that, was let me use this as an opportunity to put everything I have into sharing my music during the two months of the contest. That’s when I started my YouTube [page].”

Kina Grannis ‘In Your Arms’ Video

Kina Grannis 'In Your Arms' video behind the scenes

is out with the music video to her new single ‘In Your Arms’, which uses 288,000 jelly beans and took 22 months, 1,357 hours and 30 people to create. The song is off the American singer songwriter’s latest album ‘Stairwells’.

“The whole thing I was hoping for is I wanted to make a video that’s very unique and really creative and feels handmade. Something that stands on its own and would be interesting that people might want to share with people,” Kina said about the Greg Jardin directed video. “I was out to dinner one night and I get a call saying, ‘Alright, I got this idea’. Okay, what is it? ‘Have you seen these pieces of art made just out of jellybeans?’ No, but it sounds amazing. I’m like, ‘It sounds amazing. I don’t know if it’s possible.’ I didn’t really know what to expect. You can try to picture Jelly Bellys moving around and painting a picture, but nothing was quite like seeing what it actually turned out to be.”

Kina Grannis Performs ‘Mr. Sun’

Kina Grannis 'Mr. Sun' performed her song ‘Mr. Sun’, which is off her recent album release ‘Stairwells’. The singer songwriter then discussed tour dates in support of the LP. Check out show details and purchase tickets at kinagrannis.com. Because of the unusually non-sunny weather in Los Angeles and a failed attempt to record the song outside due to sirens and helicopters, she drew the sky and sun on her wall instead.

“So give me one minute to explain myself,” Kina said after the performance. “So I wanted to play ‘Mr. Sun’ in celebration of springtime, and so I wanted to play it in the sun obviously outside, where it’s green and pretty. Living in LA, that shouldn’t be too hard, except the last week it’s been all gloomy and rainy and freezing, well, not freezing, 50 degrees. Anyways, it’s been not sunny, so that was feeling and yesterday it was sunny, so I went outside and I must have tried about twenty takes, but I swear to you that every minute there was either a siren, a helicopter, or a really loud truck going down my street, so it was a huge failure and my last resort was, okay, I’ll make a spring inside my house. I decided I’d cover a whole wall in blue Post-its, but apparently that’s as far as a pack of blue Post-its goes, so it’s not quite an entire sky, but it’s enough to give you the gist that is a ‘Mr. Sun’ and it’s the sky.”
