Maria Taylor ‘Up All Night’

Maria Taylor

Maria Taylor has released a new song entitled ‘Up All Night’, which can be heard via Soundcloud below. The track is the first from the singer songwriter’s upcoming album ‘Something About Knowing’, which will be available on October 29th via Saddle Creek. ‘Something About Knowing’ celebrates Taylor’s folk, pop and electronic lineages.

Discussing the ‘Up All Night’ songwriting process, Maria said, “This is the first song I wrote for this record. I wrote it a couple of months after my son was born. There is usually one song on each record that just comes to me all at once - like it was already written. That was the case with this song.” She continues, “Through my sleep deprived delirium and roller coaster of every emotion imaginable, came this song. It’s a belated birthday present.”

Maria Taylor Compares ‘LadyLuck’ To Prior Solo Albums

The Tripwire spoke with Maria Taylor in a Q&A, asking the singer songwriter how her latest album ‘LadyLuck’ compares to her prior solo albums ’11:11′ and ‘Lynn Teeter Flower’. “Songwriting, my approach is the same,” the former Azure Ray said. “Always. I only know how to write songs the same way I’ve always written them. So I feel like every record is just a reflection of where I am in my life, and that’s pretty much how they differ. Then I try with each record to do something a little different production-wise. Like on ‘Lynn Teeter Flower’, I wanted to make it more like my live sound, so it was a little more stripped-down, and we just all set up and played it as if we were playing a show. Since I did that, for this one I wanted to elaborate more with strings and woodwinds, so I got my friends who are awesome musicians to just run wild with it.” Check out the entire interview here.

Maria Taylor ‘LadyLuck’ Performance & Interview

Maria Taylor performs 'LadyLuck'Maria Taylor stopped by the Threadless office to perform ‘LadyLuck’ and answer questions from the web site’s readers. Taylor talked about collaborating with R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe on ‘Cartoons and Forever Plans’, normally coming up with the idea for a song before the lyrics, wanting to relive 24, and wanting to duet with Carol King.

“Michael Stipe has been a friend of mine for the last ten years,” Maria said about her collaboration with the R.E.M. singer on ‘Cartoons’, “so we were hanging out one night and I was working on a song and he just said do you want some help with this? Do you want me to help you with lyrics? Duh, yeah! So we sat up all night long until the sun came up and finished the song.”

On whether the music or lyrics come to her first, Maria said, “I usually have an idea, but not the lyrics, so I’ll know what the song will be about, and then the music and then the melody, and then the lyrics.”

Maria Taylor Recovers Some Of Her Stolen Gear

Maria Taylor checked in with fans on her blog at MySpace (@mariataylor) on Wednesday (July 16) with an update on the equipment that had been stolen from her van last week in San Francisco. The Saddle Creek artist writes:

Hi everyone!

I just want to say “thank you.. so very much” to everyone who has shown us support this past week. Yes, there might be a few shi**y people out there who could do something like… break into a van and take everything… but I was reminded by all of your sweet emails and efforts to help us retrieve our gear, that most people are amazing.

With the help of your leads mixed with the help of the coolest investigator from the San Fran police dept ever, we have found my TENNESSEE ROSE GRETSCH and Taylor’s 1976 LES PAUL!!!

My Martin acoustic was on Craigslist, but now they have taken it off. I think we can get it back too!!!

I truly can’t thank you enough. These stupid thieves had no idea they were dealing with an army of “us.” Despite the less than desirable ending, we had so much fun on this tour. Thanks to everyone who came out!! We have some video footage from the road that we will edit down and share soon….
