One Direction On Staying Grounded & Keeping It Real

One Direction member Harry Styles being interviewed in New Zealand

Close Up’s Mark Sainsbury interviewed Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson of One Direction on their New Zealand visit. The boyband talked about those who questioned whether they really get along, how far they can go with the pop group, staying grounded despite all the adoration and more.

On those who question their authenticity having been put together for a television show:

Louis: You don’t have to spend a day with us to realize our relationship isn’t contrived, and nothing about the band really is other than the fact that we were put together on ‘The X Factor’. We are as real as possible. We’re not trying to in sync dance and we don’t all dress the same. It’s not like one of those boybands from the past. We’re just trying to do what we want to do really.

Harry: I think you can tell a bit from interviews that we’ve done. Compared to a lot of interviews people do we’re very real.

On how long they realistically can go on for, Liam said:

I think it’s really difficult to tell because we weren’t doing what we’re doing now this time two years ago. We weren’t expected to be in this position now so I think we’re really happy to have gotten as far as we’ve got but I think we want to take it further. As long as we work hard and keep making good music, that can happen.

On keeping their feet on the ground despite fans screaming out their window wherever they go, Zayn said:

I think we’re quite lucky in terms of the fact that we have each other to keep each other grounded. We have four of the people going through exactly the same thing we’re going through. Just having friends and family they kind of keep us grounded. I think that we’re just quite lucky that we’ve come from supportive families and we have good friends around us as well.

On other bands that find success and then it implodes, Louis said:

I think that’s what drives us to keep grounded. You occasionally meet the odd person that you can tell it’s gone to their head, but that’s what drives us to remain grounded.

Louis Tomlinson Discusses One Direction Security, Fans & Bandmates

Louis Tomlinson of One Direction interviewed in New Zealand

In New Zealand for a few days, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson talked with Radio Live’s Hilary Barry and recalled his experiences of the last 18 months, looking forward to the next 18 months, the great job their security does and how he really does get along with his bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Harry Styles as much as it appears.

On being able to leave their hotels with screaming girls outside:

We’ve got an amazing security team actually who have been working closely at the moment and they’ve just made everything a lot easier for us and safer.

If he’s surprised by their adoring fans:

Yeah, we are surprised. I don’t think it’s something you can ever get used to really. It’s an amazing feeling to think that those people are there for us. At the end of the day, we’re just doing something that we love. To be appreciated for that, it’s really nice.

On getting along with his bandmates:

I think sometimes people think it’s a little too good to be true. People often question if we actually do get on as well as it seems and we actually genuinely do, which is crazy because we didn’t know each other 18 months ago. This would be such a different story if we were solo artists. I don’t know if I’d be able to hack it if I was a solo artist. It’s a lot of time away from home, but to have the other guys with you is really nice. It makes everything so much more fun.

One box of cereal. Corn Flakes, which Louis said is a standard, not a favorite. “I’m a big cereal lover.”

Louis Tomlinson of One Direction interviewed

On crazy fans:

Just the usual stuff like people chase after the bus and slap the windows and that kind of thing. Nothing out of the ordinary really.

Who should be supporting them on upcoming tours:

I don’t really know. It’s always exciting. They’ve got Olly Murs on this tour, which is really cool. It’s always exciting to hear the support acts who are with us. As far as next year’s concerned, no idea at the moment.

On if they’re tired with all the travel:

We’re a bit more used to it now. It’s not too bad. I’ve been a little tired this morning, but it’s alright. It’s great to travel the world and visit different places.

What he does on his downtime:

Just really normal things, like call my mom, play football (soccer) if we have a chance, videogames. Just really normal stuff. Watch films. that kind of thing.

We’d have to said Niall.” As for incidents were people on drugs have been eating people, Zayn said, “I don’t think it’s realistic that there is gonna be a zombie apocalypse anytime soon, but if there is, I think Niall’s gonna need saving.”

If a girl asked him to the prom, Zayn said “it depends” whether he’d respond yes. “If she wanted me to take her to prom, then probably I don’t think my girlfriend would be too happy about that,” Zayn explained, adding that he and his girlfriend are “going really well. She’s cool.”

On his favorite type of underwear to wear, Zayn said, “I like big shorts. I don’t like anything too small. I don’t like anything too tight.”

As for how he achieves his hairstyle, Zayn said “a little bit of hairspray and a blow-dryer.”

Posed with a bad breath conundrum and if he’d pick onions or garlic to eat for the rest of his life, Zayn said, “It’s hard actually because I like garlic as well, but onions are my favorite. It’s gotta be onions.”

On celebrity crushes, Niall said:

I was told the Kardashian girls were our fans so I decided to Tweet Khloe (and invite them to the show). They’re all very hot.

That prompted Kidd to call Khloe up and they had a conversation.

On debuting at #1 in the U.S., Harry said:

I think that obviously we’re not from here, so for us to come over here and for us to come over and just be welcomed by everyone. Everyone’s been so nice and we’re very grateful. The reaction has been more than anything we could have asked for. The fans have been absolutely amazing.

On being so polished while performing on television, Niall said:

We spent most of 2010 on ‘The X Factor’ so we had cameras basically living with us from the minute we went to sleep from the minute we woke up. Cameras are on all the time so you just get used to it.

We always spend so much time away from England, and when they go back to London it’s kind of like their country. But I’m always away because I live in London as it is.

On beating out Adele at the Brits, Harry said:

It’s just like so strange. She is literally in terms of music, the last year she could just do no wrong. The album is amazing. Obviously being number one for so long just shows how incredible it was.

One Direction (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson) interviewed at Mario Kart

Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson of One Direction were interviewed by Sugarscape while promoting Mario Kart, where the boyband talked about how they spent Valentine’s Day, Liam not drinking, and how American fans compare to their British followers.

On Valentine’s Day, Niall said:

We were actually working for a lot of it, which was a bit upsetting. We went straight back to England when we were finished so we didn’t get to spend a lot of time there. Maybe next time when we’ve got more time.

On Liam choosing not to drink, Louis said:

Let me tell you, he uses in interviews that can’t drink. We researched it and he can drink. He’s been using it as an excuse ever since we’ve been trying to corrupt him. We’ve been trying to corrupt him ever since.

Asked about American fans compared to British fans, Harry said:

American fans seem to be more confident. They’re more likely to come up to you and have a conversation with you. I wouldn’t say (the British fans) were scared. I don’t know. I’m not really sure.

One Direction Are Pink In A Boyband & Get Pelted With Carrots

One Direction (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson) live

Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson of One Direction were in the studio with 103.5 KTU in New York City on March 13th, where the boyband talked about Simon Cowell putting the group together, their success, what to expect from their album, their influences and why girls throw carrots at them on stage.

On getting to know each other:

We had two weeks to get to know each other before we performed together at my house, and we kind of just made sure we were friends first. We hung out and played soccer.

Being excited about how things have gone:

It’s been real exciting. When we started out we expected to do maybe one record in England and see how that goes, but the power of YouTube and Twitter it expanded it across Europe and now we’re here in America, it’s crazy for us at the moment.

On what to expect from the album:

There’s something different for everybody. There’s slow songs, upbeat songs… We just hope there’s something on there that you like and enjoy, and maybe something that surprises you that you didn’t expect us to do, so that’s what you can expect.

On their influences:

We’ve been told that we’re like Pink in a boyband, so that’s what we try to work around. Kind of pop rock.

On carrots being thrown on stage:

When we first started out on X Factor, just because I thought I was witty and funny, I found out I was actually neither of those, I decided to say I like girls who eat carrots. Ever since, girls have thrown carrots on stage, given me carrots as a gift.
