Pop Artists Celebrate Repeal Of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

Lady Gaga celebrates DADT repeal

Some pop artists are reacting to news that the U.S. Senate passed a repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” earlier today in a 65-31 vote. The policy restricts the U.S. military from efforts to discover or reveal closeted gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers or applicants, while barring those who are openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual from military service. President Obama is expected to sign the measure into law next week. Lady Gaga, who was urging her 7 million followers to contact Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other senators got a Tweet from Reid after the repeal was passed.

Senator Harry Reid (@SenatorReid): @ladygaga We did it! #DADT is a thing of the past.

Lady Gaga (@ladygaga): Can’t hold back the tears+pride. We did it!i Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS. Today I am so proud to be American. I wish I was home so I could throw a Parade. We are on the way…to full equality.

(@GrlCalledLauren): “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” is forever gone! Thank goodness for that!! No American has to lie anymore!!!!!

(@ricky_martin): One step closer to #equality!! #DADT is gone!Historical! #lgbt

Ricky Martin Hated Himself Before Coming Out

tells Oprah Winfrey he “hated himself” before he decided to come out as a homosexual. ‘Showbiz Tonight’ spoke about the interview with Janell Snowden of VH1 News and celebrity journalist Ben Widdicombe. “I can only imagine the pain he must have felt to have hidden what he thought was a secret,” Snowden said. “Let’s be honestly. It was only a secret to, you know, those who live in oblivion, I guess. And so I guess he feared that he might lose those legions of fans. And like he said, I mean, he’s done so much for so many with his charity and with his music.” Watch the segment via CNN.com below.

GLAAD President On The Importance Of Ricky Martin Coming Out

Jarrett Barrios, the President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), offered a column about why coming out is important at PopEater. Barrios writes:

Ricky Martin coming out is, for many people, like having a friend or family member come out. “Gay” isn’t an abstract to them anymore, but the kid you knew when you were 14. The power of Ricky’s celebrity status makes fans understand gay people differently, too.

Ricky Martin: I Am Proud To Say That I Am A Fortunate Homosexual Man

posted an open letter on his official web site earlier today revealing that he’s “a fortunate homosexual man.” The ‘She Bangs’ singer writes:

Many people told me: “Ricky it’s not important”, “it’s not worth it”, “all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse”, “many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature”. Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.

… These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed.

… I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.
