The National Post reports that when Britney Spears cancelled the rest of her summer tour following a knee injury, it wasn’t just her fans that suffered. Sixteen-year-old newcomer Skye Sweetnam felt the ripple effect. The Bolton, Ontario, singer was set to open for Spears this summer. Her debut album is scheduled for a September release on Capitol Records, and the tour could have served as a launching pad for her burgeoning career.

I saw Britney Spears in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday (April 3). I had front row seats, which was amazing.
The show started off with Skye Sweetnam. At first I thought she was Avril Lavigne or something, because she looks alot like Avril… she even had that whole punk-poser look going on. Kelis was Britney’s second opening act.

Skye Sweetnam will join the North American leg of Britney Spears’ Onyx Hotel Tour, which kicks off March 2nd in San Diego. The 15-year-old Canadian singer will open up for Kelis and Britney, despite the fact that her debut album, ‘Noise From the Basement,’ won’t be in stores until May 18th. The Bolton, Ontario native appeared on the soundtrack to last summer’s How to Deal and recorded the theme song for The N cable network’s ‘Radio Free Roscoe’.
With Skye Sweetnam landing a major record deal and travelling outside her native Canada, does she get a jealous reaction from pals when she returns home? “If they’re jealous, they haven’t told me,” she tells Chart magazine. “They act so excited when they’re around me, and they’re always talking — ‘Oh, Skye was on this, you have to watch her!’ and ‘This is my favorite song!’ They always want to learn the lyrics and they’ll sing it to me. They’re great and I’m always making sure I have time for them.”
ChartAttack.com caught up with 15-year-old Skye Sweetnam to ask how she feels about preparing to launch as a pop newcomer with the release of her debut album in September. “I guess that’ll be cool…” she replied, blushing, “I don’t know, it’d be cool to have fans; I’ve never had that before, you know, people who admire what I do or…. admire how I look… it’d be fun, I guess…” Read more, including the mixed reaction she’s gotten from message boards, here.
