Tamyra Told Nikki She’d Be Voted Off ‘American Idol’

Michael Starr of the New York Post spoke with Tamyra Gray following her ouster from ‘American Idol’ last week. Gray again said she knew she’d be voted off. “I was kind of prepared for it. I was sitting there telling Nikki [McKibbin], ‘Don’t worry, I’m going home this week,” Gray said. “She was like, ‘No, I am.’ When they called my name I was just like, ‘OK.’ What do you do at that point?”

August 25, 2002 – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution spoke with Tamyra Gray who revealed what went wrong with her first song on Tuesday’s ‘American Idol’ – ‘New Attitude’. “I had no voice whatsoever,” she said. “If I had given that any more than I did, I wouldn’t have had a voice for the second song. I hadn’t been talking in several days.” Because of the vocal problems, Gray admitted, “I had a feeling this was my week to go home.”

Randy Doesn’t Know If Race Factored In Tamyra’s Ouster

August 23, 2002 – Access Hollywood asked ‘American Idol’ judge Randy Jackson about how he felt after Tamyra Gray was voted off the show on Wednesday. “You know, for the first time for me, I was very emotional. It was very sad for me, I couldn’t believe it,” he admitted. As for whether he felt racism played a role in her ouster, Jackson said, “You know I’d like to think that is not the case, but you never really, really know. I just think that had she had a good performance, she’d still be there.”
