Many musicians today are underrated, while others are a little overrated. The singers I will mention are Beyonce Knowles, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears. Beyonce Knowles was the biggest female artist this year. Why did her video for ‘Crazy In Love’ and ‘Baby Boy’ were accepted while ‘Dirrty’ and ‘Me Against The Music’ were rejected by the critics and the public. Her album debuted at number one and sold over 3 million in the U.S alone. She now is nominated for six Grammys and won multiple awards this year, 3 VMAs and 2 EMAs to name a few. But does she deserve all that recognition? If she started her solo career with ‘Me, Myself, and I’, would she be as successful if she released ‘Crazy In Love’? Probably not.
Justin Timberlake had a wonderful year. First, he was rejected by the critics, dubbing him as a Michael Jackson wannabe and his performance at the VMA’s 2002 was called unoriginal. Then he started this year with the ‘Cry Me A River’ video. People made too much out of it. Did it shock anyone? No. His album went to #2 on the Billboard charts and now has sold over 3 million. Rolling Stone just dubbed him the New King of Pop and was named Artist of the Year by a some magazines. Tell me anything he did this year to deserve those titles beside sleeping with 5 women, posing half nude in magazine covers, and trying to sell Britney’s love letters. What did he contribute to the music industry? Nothing new.
Christina Aguilera also had a fantastic year and returned to the surface. Her comments about other stars overshadowed her talents. The only singer that stopped her success was Beyonce and lost many awards to her. To me honestly, she deserves them more than Beyonce and is the only female artist out there who actually can sing besides Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys. Her last 4 singles were songs that had meaning and deserved more recognition. She didn’t have to dance and dress next to nothing to attract attention, unlike Beyonce, and her singles been successful. There’s a lot of chances that she’s going to win many in the upcoming Grammys since it’s really about the quality of the album, not the number one hits and dance songs.
Britney Spears has been quiet for almost 2 years and spent most of this year recording her album. She saw her competition rule and overtake her title. Many people without hesitation, thinks Britney is talentless. That’s why I think Britney is underrated. I hate the fact that she lip-synchs, but she is great performer and is trying different genres of music. Who cares if she can’t find her own music, at least she’s trying to find her own music and is not evolving into R&B music like everyone else to have a hit.
