Jen Waters of The Washington Times spoke with Vanessa Carlton, who credits much of her success to her piano teacher, who is also her mother. “She has always been the hand on my back, saying, ‘OK, you’re good,’” she said. “She is always rooting for me, also at the same time giving me my freedom and letting me make my own mistakes. She’s not thrilled about the whole rock scene, but she knows this is what I want to be doing, and she’s really proud.”
