What does it take to be a music legend? Artists like Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway are undeniably legends. But is it because of their creative innovations or because of the emotions their music brings forth in their legions of devoted fans? While many artists have diehard fans, does that in itself make for legendary status? *NSYNC has devoted fans, but will they still be as devoted 20 years from now? What about album sales? None of the above mentioned legends sold millions of copies in their artistic heyday, though all of them are still selling records 20-30 years after they first came onto the scene. Legend status is a combination of a body of work, music that has substance–not just the hottest dance track of the day, but music that becomes part of our lives–and an artistry that goes beyond what others have done before.
