Young Popstars

When the word popstar is mentioned the names that immediately come to mind are Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, etc… but some are left out of that immediate first thought, and that’s the young popstars that have all done really well in their own right.

First there’s Lindsay Lohan, who began her career at the age of 3 as a model for the Ford Academy, and has appeared in over 60 commercials. She then had roles in Disney made for tv movies, and a recurring role on Bette Midler’s TV show “Bette”. She’s appeared in 8 big screen movies, is currently filming two (Just My Luck, and Herbie), and has 5 films in pre-production; her paycheck per film is 7 million dollars. Lindsay released her first CD, “Speak,” on December 7, 2004; it debuted at #4 selling 260,000 copies in its first week.

Next up would be Ashlee Simpson, who began her career acting in a recurring role on the WB hit show 7th Heaven. In 2004 Ashlee followed in her famous sisters footsteps and ventured into the music industry, she released her debut album, “Autobiography,” to first week sales of 398,000, with the entire process caught on tape and shown on her MTV show. The lead single hit #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks, and her album went triple platinum in a month. She also recorded a duet with her sister, “Little Drummer Boy,” that appears on Jessica’s Christmas album “Re-Joyce.” Ashlee ended 2004 with the 9th biggest selling album of the year, her other two singles, “Shadow”, and “La La,” were both Top 20 hits. Ashlee will make her big screen debut later this year in “Wannabe.”

Then comes Hilary Duff, who started her career in 1998 starring in the film “Casper Meets Wendy,” following that she appeared on “Chicago Hope,” and in tv movie “Soul Collector.” In 2001 she got her big break starring in her own Disney channel show “Lizzie Maguire” making $35,000 per episode. After leaving the show Hilary has appeared in 7 movies, including “Lizzie Maguire The Movie,” is currently working on 2 movies, and has one movie in pre-production, her paycheck per film is 2 million dollars. Hilary had her first hit in 2003 with “So Yesterday,” which topped the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart for two weeks. She’s sold over 5 million records, and has had 2 Top 10 hits, a Top 20 hit, and one Top 40 hit. She’s won 2 Kid’s Choice awards, and 1 World Music award.

Last and the most successful so far is Avril Lavigne. At the age of 16 Avril won a trip to New York, and while there she caught the eye of LA Reid, and was signed to Arista Records. Her debut album, “Let Go,” was released in June 2002, and was an immediate hit. It’s lead single went straight to #1 and held that spot for 5 weeks, and the album went platinum in under a month, at the end of 02’ Rolling Stone named her the best performer of the year, and the best new artist. Her second CD debuted at #1 selling 381,000 copies in its first week. To date though she hasn’t won any, she’s been nominated for 8 Grammys, and has won 7 Juno awards, 3 MTV Asia awards, 2 World Music awards, 2 Much Music awards, 1 Kid’s Choice, 1 MTV VMA, and 1 MTV Latin America award. She’s had 4 # 1’s, Top 10 hits, and has spent a total of 11 weeks at #1 (All but one of her singles hit #1 in Canada). Avril has sold over 20 million records, and was rated as #94 on the 100 Top Popstars List of the Last 25 Years.
