AJ Gives Insight Into New Backstreet Boys Record

MuchMusic caught up with AJ McLean at the ‘Daredevil’ movie premiere. AJ told the network, “We’ve been writing non-stop as individuals for like the past year. So we’re comin’ together with a real wide range of, ya know, sounds from like rock to pop to hip hop to contemporary to whatever. It’s gonna be a real wide-ranged record.” When asked about Backstreet Boys splitting, AJ replied “We’re a family. And we’re a group. And we’ve made a conscious promise to each other that we’re gonna be together forever.” The interviewer asked if they wanted to regain their crown. AJ said, “Uhm, I don’t even think we’re looking at it that way anymore….‘Cause we’re doin’ it for our fans…and for ourselves. Question: Going back in the studio with the Backstreet Boys?
AJ: Yep, we’re probably gonna go back in the studio either next month or the month after. And uh we’ve been writing non-stop as individuals for like the past year. So we’re comin’ together with a real wide range of, ya know, sounds from like rock to pop to hip hop to contemporary to whatever. It’s gonna be a real wide-ranged record, so…

Q: What is it that makes you all want to stay together to do that instead of doing solo projects or just going off and doing other things?
AJ: We’re a family. And we’re a group. And we’ve made a conscious promise to each other that we’re gonna be together forever. And it’s just, ya know, we’re the ones that can make or break ourselves. And we’re also the ones that can call it quits. Or the ones that can say that we’re gonna keep going. And we’ve chosen to keep going, ya know.

Q: Is it hard though ‘cause whenever you take time off, and you’ve had off a year or so? I mean all these other act’s come up and…
AJ: It’s gonna happen.

Q: Is it hard to go back to ‘well what can we do to regain our crown?
AJ: Uhm, I don’t even think we’re looking at it that way anymore. I think we’re just looking at puttin’ together a great record with a lot of really good songs and stuff that appeases all of our fans. ‘Cause we’re doin’ it for our fans…and for ourselves. So, we’re kinda sayin’ we don’t really care what the media thinks of it anymore, and more or less what we think of ourselves and what our fans think of us.

Q: Is it gonna be a different sound then, you think?
AJ: Probably. Probably a little bit edgier. I honestly couldn’t tell ya ‘cause I don’t even know what it’s gonna be like (interview laughs).

Q: Well, how are you doin’ yourself?
AJ: Doin’ great.

Q: Are you still going to meetings?
AJ: Oh yeah, still goin’ to meetings and pluggin’ in, ya know. Sober living is much better than partying and stuff like that.

Q: Are you getting married?
AJ: Yep. Uhm, we actually postponed the wedding right now ‘cause there’s so much crazy stuff goin’ on and uh yeah. It’s gonna be great. I can’t wait. I love her to death. She’s a wonderful woman. And uh I’m really looking forward to it.
