Kelly Clarkson Teams With Christina Aguilera
‘American Idol’ champ Kelly Clarkson tells Entertainment Weekly that she had an unexpected writing partner on ‘Miss Independent’ by the name of Christina Aguilera, though she’s never met the pop star.
“I was working with my producer, Rhett Lawrence, and he was playing the ‘Miss Independent’ beat and I was like, ‘That’s hot.’ And he was like, ‘It’s already kind of a song,'” Clarkson explained. Lawrence and Aguilera had considered ‘Miss Independent’ as a track for ‘Stripped’, but never got around to completing the song. After putting the finishing touches on the tune, Clarkson, Lawrence, and Aguilera share songwriting credit, according to a representative for RCA, home of Aguilera and Clarkson. Read more.
Kelly Clarkson Won’t Be Fenced In By Teen Pop Structures
March 30, 2003 – American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson makes plain that she doesn’t really care what judge Simon Cowell, or anyone else, has to say about which direction she should go musically. She’s not going to be fenced in by teen pop strictures. “Normally with new artists, like Pink and [Christina Aguilera], they end up saying, you know, ‘My first album wasn’t me.’ They bring out the second album and say, ‘This is me. This is who I am,'” she tells Douglas Perry of Knight Ridder. “But the show made it easier for me to say, ‘No, this is what I want to do.’ All I heard for the past couple years was, ‘Oh, I can’t sell you. You have no image.’ And that’s just so sad. I’m a singer. ‘That’s’ my image.”
‘Idol’ Broke Down Potential Misconceptions Of Kelly Clarkson
March 30, 2003 – Douglas Perry of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson is convinced that show helped break down potential misconceptions rather than build them up. “Look at me. I’m from Texas and I’m white, so what does everybody think I’m going to sing?” she says. “Country. I love country to death, but I’m too into bluesy. I love Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire. Reba’s country, but she’s also got a lot of soul. Soulful and bluesy, that’s what I’m all about.”
