Mariah Carey Doesn’t Deserve Extravagance

Pat Monahan of the Georgetown Hoya shared his thoughts on Mariah Carey after hearing about her extravagant demands on a tour of China. He writes, “Celebrities can be pretty tough to please, but we’re not talking about someone who has permanently earned their place in music’s pantheon of all-time greats. We’re talking about Mariah Carey here – someone who, despite her supposed eight-octave vocal range hasn’t really had a hit since she decided she’d get rid of the curly hair, flannel shirts and wholesome image after divorcing Tommy Mottola. Madonna might be able to get away with this kind of thing, even though her latest single doesn’t really seem to contain much ‘musical’ talent and she’s been better-known as the chick that kissed Britney Spears than as a musician in the past few months. The only musician I can think of that would have been able to pull off that kind of extravagance in his heyday (and might have actually done it if the opportunity presented itself) is Elvis, and, well, we all know what he’s up to these days – or do we?”

Who really cares if she demands that much, she is the one paying the big bills. Anyway, after she divorced, she actually had 4 number one hits which were Honey, My All, Heartbreaker, and T.G.I.F.Y. She deserves the respect from the music industry and as far as am concerned, she has more number one singles and albums than any female artist and dethroned The Beatles as the artist who spent most consecutive weeks in the number one spot on Billboard.

What does having hit singles have to do with wanting extravagant demands? If she has the money for it, why not? This critic is acting as if he’s the one that has to pay for everything.

If lesser has-beens like Air Supply, Kaja Goo Goo, Jennifer Brown and Samantha Cole are respected and treated like royalty in Asia, then the biggest has-been of all time, Mariah Carey, for all her past achievements deserve MORE royal treatment and respect.

I hate to break to the person that wrote this Artical but Mariah did get away with Changing her image. When I think about it though get away with what she dresses sexy wow big deal I guess she should be arrested. It’s Mariah has gone to sexy like Britney, Christina, Madonna, J-Ho, and Janet have. Mariah has class and that shine’s through and she doesn’t just have an 8 Octave Voice she Writes and Produces all her own song and songs for other Artists such as Faith Hill’s “Where Are You Christmas”. Mariah has had #4 #1 Hits after taking on a sexier image and she just got a #3 Hit with Busta Rhymes this year with “I know What You Want” So it’s obvious this person is just a hater that is pissed because she is doing so well.

I doubt he is a hater that is angry with her doing well, my guess is a college student who thinks that Americans as opposed to Chinese or other countries aren’t so extravagant about their wealth and stardom. He made a comment about how Mariah has a lot of shoes and the average college student there only has one or two.

The point was that she isn’t such a big celebrity anymore to act like a queen, and make demands as such. I don’t think he thinks anyone should do that and went on to make equally sarcastic and true remarks about others. this is a college newspaper, why getting upset over something so amateurish?

All I have to say to this author is WHO CARES!!!! He acts like Mariah is getting this stuff for free, when Mariah is the one dishing out her own money so she can be comfortable why she’s away from home. People seem to forget that Mariah’s been touring for 6 months and hasn’t even had a chance to go home and relax, if Mariah wants to make some demands while she’s overseas, then it’s her business!!! I’m sure you people would be doing the same thing if certain things bothered you. And this author is not educated on the subject either, he says that Mariah DIDN’T get the VIP treatment on her trip back, when in reality she did, the airport manager already went on record saying she did. People need to wake up and realize that Mariah is NOT gonna sell 27 million records anymore, NO ONE DOES!!! It’s pretty much impossible in this day and age, yet Mariah STILL is making multi-platinum albums. GET OVER IT!

Seriously, I’ve been in here for about 2 weeks now reading messages here and there…. and conclusion…… Every last one of you are losers! Do you think about anything else besides pop “singers”? Who freakin’ cares about these people anyway. If you like there “music” fine. But what’s the point debating on the most subjective things in the world…. I say subjective because it is clear to me that none of you have ever studied music with the things that you all praise. Lastly, how is it that you fans claim to know these celebrities so well in order to love them so much…. and vice versa how do you know them so well that you can hate so much about them… all the way to their families who aren’t even in the pubic eye. Verdict… you people need lives!

What the F**K are you on? J-Lo out sing Mariah. I don’t think so bro! Mariah has like a 5 – 7 octave range. Jennifer Lopez has like half an octave on a good day. J-Lo can’t have a hit song unless she has another artist on the track helping her out! Mariah is the biggest selling female artist of the 90’s!!! Mariah is also the only artist to have a number 1 single each year in the 90’s. I could go on and on about how much better Mariah is then J-lo. but I think you get the picture. Jennifer Lopez will never be as good as Mariah!

Just to let you know, I have a life! I only come on this website when I am the most bored; I don’t take the comments and the subject matters so seriously. These pop “singers” or “artists” don’t revolve around me; they don’t buy me food, buy my clothes, pay the bills to my house, or teach me the best of life’s lessons that I get out of each day. I don’t praise these artists or their music, I don’t claim to “know” Mariah Carey or any other celebrity just because I listen to their records; my life still goes on whether or not any of these artists have anything going on in their lives.
