What’s Happened To Popdirt?

Before I proceed, please let me remind you that this is an article based on my thoughts and opinions and any malicious, derogatory feedback will defeat the purpose of me writing it. Thank you.

I, for one, am ashamed at how much this place has gone downhill. It was, at one time, a place for music fans to gather and discuss their opinions regarding pop artists, their music, and gossip. There have been haters since the beginning, but it still seemed possible that fans of *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears (etc…) could all co-exist in music loving harmony — despite their distaste in the other artists.

Now, however, it is a rare occasion that someone should read an article without 493,284 disgusting comments afterwards. These comments include, but are not limited to, threats of death and rape, racist slurs and other grotesque malevolence. Comments that are not always directed at the artist themselves, but rather their fans, simply for being a fan.

I am certainly not blaming you as a whole, as for the most part, you all seem to be sweet, funny and witty individuals with intelligent things to say. Not only that, but I have been guilty myself for being a b*tch on more than one occasion. So don’t get me wrong at all. But the perpetrators — the really hateful ones — know who they are.

Where do we draw the line? I mean, sure, Popdirt.com’s just a little place on the big ‘ole internet, and we all have our own lives in the real world… Still, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to come here with the knowledge that you aren’t going to be slammed and threatened for having a differing opinion? Wouldn’t it be nice to see that although someone doesn’t (for example…) like Britney’s voice, or loathes Xtina’s attire, or thinks that Justin copies BSB or vice versa they don’t wish they were dead for it?

Of course, I don’t think we should stop arguing altogether. Definitely not. This place would be so mundane, not to mention an infringement on our right to freedom of speech. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little ripping on your fellow posters here or there, or flat-out saying “Dude, you’re wrong”. For example, Jimmypee and I aren’t particularly fond of one another, but I certainly don’t wish him death. We simply disagree on frequent occasions.

But people like Xtina-Dirrty… I don’t think they are actually excersizing their right to freedom of speech. They are just being CRUEL, under the guise of “just stating their opinion”.

Thank you for your time, and I apologize if I have offended anyone. :-)
